Hello everyone, We've had our 1st kid 3 months ago... He's suddenly developed this habit of sucking his fingers. That even happens immediately after he's finished feeding so hunger isn't the reason. We try as much as possible to keep him from putting his hands in his mouth, but the habit still continues. We do not want him to get into the habit if sucking his fingers or to even give him a pacifier. Any ideas to get rid of this habit??

This is a comfort habit for young children. If they aren't allowed to have a pacifier, chances are that they are going to suck on their fingers as a way to comfort themselves. Both of my children developed the habit of sucking their thumbs when they were very young because they wouldn't take the pacifier. The only thing that I could do to get them to stop was to remove their fingers from their mouths every time that we saw them doing it and to tell them no.

Congratulations! We've become parents since 4 months ago as well :-) Our baby always chew on his fingers as well since he turned 3 months, it is because he realizes he has fingers so when he has nothing to do, he just put it in his mouth or when he is hungry. You can put some rubber ring on his hand instead. When they grow a little older, they can pick up things, then he will put anything that he picks up into his mouth so not fingers only

Babies are born to suck. My daughter started sucking on her fingers (and toes--just wait until your little one figures that out!) around the time she started teething. I didn't discourage it because sucking helps calm her down, and she's given the habit up on her own now that she's got a few teeth and knows that biting her toes doesn't feel very good. I had a couple of people tell me to put something that tasted bad (like hot sauce or lime juice) on her fingers and toes to keep her from doing it, but that just seems mean. She didn't hurt anything by sucking on her fingers or toes, so I just let her be.

My son used to suck his thumb when he was around 5 months. We also don't want him to used pacifier. And strange as it sounds, it is better for him to suck his finger rather than sucking pacifier. There have been research made about that, at least that what I was told. How to make him stop? All we need to do is always pull his finger out from his mouth when he start to suck his fingers. Do that everytime. I know it troublesaome sometimes, but in order to kick out this finger suckin habit, we need to start from the beginning. Try this and I think in 1 month time he will stop sucking his fingers. My son now didn't suck his fingers anymore.

It's a habit than can be hard to kick at times I know as my cousin sucked his thumb for more than months rather for quite a few years. I've no real ideas on how you kick such a habit though my cousin just eventually grew out of it though if that helps at all.
