Would you rather use a Debit Card or Check for your purchases ?

I know this might sound like a very ignorant question, but I am asking it anyways, being that places still excepts checks. Personally, I cannot stand using a debit card because of issues I have had with it. There has been money in my account on several occasions and the card would not take ( or read according to the cashier ) The bank would have no explanation for it. I do not carry much cash around, so of course I turn to my faithful checks. The transaction would go through, no problem. I live in a rural area, and we have one of those small mama and poppa stores. They will NOT except the debit cards at all, only checks, but they do set up accounts. They tell me that it cost them to much money to make the transactions which would raise their prices, so they are just sticking to accepting checks. What is your preference..are you one of those that likes the old fashion way of paying, perhaps with cash ?

either way, the bank will ding you some how because they will charge you fees for using either. i think paying with cash is better because then the bank won't take anything from you.

Cash is the best and still the fastest way. I laugh when I see commercials that imply the card is faster, clearly they never stood in line behind a women with a full purse who had to dig and dig to find her card. People know exactly where there cash is.

cher: My bank does not charge fees for using my card for purchasing. In fact, they reward me with points redeemable for merchandise or cash every time I do use it. Gameslayer: I beg to differ with people knowing exactly where their cash is. I have stood behind women digging in those full purses for dollar bills and change.

Cher..your right, the bank will ding you some how, one way or another, even if you do get cash back, but that is how they make their money just like any other business. I am not aware of any banks around my area giving redeemable points for merchandise for using a debit card. Lord, if my bank did we would have a lot back due to my husband faithful sliding ! And, about the digging in your purse issue..it's worked both ways for me. If I use the card I am bad about sliding it into a pocket of my purse, and then will be looking for it with the next purchase, and the cash..again, I stuff it down in a pocket because I know there is a line behind me, and I know they do not want to wait on me to put the cash back into my wallet lol. Now I sound like a very unorganized women !

Here in our country, checks usually use in dealing with big transactions. Cards or cash is the most common way of acquiring our needs. And yes, your right, is it common that debit cards usually could not read by machine and there was the problem when we do not have cash because we trust that we have the cards. Well of course, having big cash is definitely not safe or practical for someone impulsive buyer like me, that would be a big problem. But I think, cash or debit card for impulsive buyer just have the same effect. So I think I would prefer to have cash for I could consider its safety and would limit my expenses as well.

Just to correct my last statement. I can consider safety of having cash if I would bring an amount just exact to buy what are needs, in such a way it could limit my expenses. Unlike having debit cards, it's like having with us all the money with us, and unsafe if it has been lost or stolen.

Impulisive buyer here too. I am thinking being a implulisve buyer, a card would be worse because it is matter of "quickness" just as a implusive purchase is. By the time I stand in line and I fill in the check ( except at walmart ) , I do have time to think about what I am buying. I have been known to set something aside at the last min, all because I had a tad bit of time to think about it.

I was glad to stop using checks when the stores started scanning the check into their system, and then handing the check back to me. Most of the checks I still write are for those bills I put in the mail. Other than that most is done elctronically.

I'm not so concerned about wasted paper (as in being green). I'm thinking about the cost of checks. If they are going to hand it right back to me, I feel like it was a waste. We don't get checks back anymore, although at least one of our accounts allows you to see the scanned image online.

Almost everywhere except my little store runs the check electronically like you said. However, I am not a big fan of getting the check back. I keep all of my receipts so it seems to be just another piece of paper I have to store. But with me saying that, I see that it is a waste of paper.

I prefer to use cash anymore because the type of cards that are out there now always have hidden fees and catches that are in such fine print we miss them. But if I have to use a card I use my bank card as credit because it comes out immediately and the credit doesn't cost anything to use unlike debit.

Very true, it's always that fine print that many fail to read, and of course it is filled with small fees. The thing I don't like about using the card as credit is having to remember the pin #. My mind runs 100 mph and have to remeber a number would not be a good thing for me.

I don't debit card...to easy to spend to much, and forget to enter to deduct. I"d much rather do checks or cash. Watch out tho...this summer they are saying that banks (chase and USBank being two specified) will start charging to use a debit card...even it if it is at a accomodating ATM. They said it will either be a yearly annual fee, or a per transaction fee or possibly both. The per transaction will be less if they charge the annual fee. They have already ended free checking (B of A and Chase to being the first) and charge %10 or more per month unless you have either direct deposit or a large daily balance. I closed my BofA last year when they started charging for the account and then were going to start charging if you use a HUMAN teller! Then this week I closed my Chase (used to be WAMU...back when they were the best!) and come February they will start charging for checking accounts. Cash is on the come back, far as I'm concerned!

Most are 10 dollars at least, now. But the thing is...they don't just take your cash/paycheck and deposit it into your account and that money just gets filed away somewhere in the bank vault and when you withdraw, they go get that cash back out for you. They take your money and invest it and THEY keep the interest they earn off YOUR money. They invest YOUR money into building and things like that, and then get "paid back" when the builder pays them back...with interest. They invest in stocks and IRAs and bonds and mortgages and things like that. That is why we are in this mess. They took all OUR money, invested it unwisely, and when it crashed...all the money was lost...but they couldn't tell the depositers that they lost their money, so now you can't make a withdraw...so they recoop in other ways....i.e. charging for the account, charging high fees for this and that. They gambled with our money, lost it and are not making us foot the bill!

You just might be right with the cash being on the come back. With all these ridcluious fees being charged it will force people to use cash when paying. I had a hard time when I went to joining accounts with my husband when we got married, ( 13 yrs ago ) ,his bank charged for the account. At the time I was with a free bank account. It was 7.00 and it has gone all the way up to 9.00 a month. But, I guess if you are wanting someone to hold your money you have to pay for it haha. At least my checks would be free but since I get the duplicates, I am charged, but its worth it !

I seldom use my checks usually only if I have to pay a bill through the mail. I am signed up with Charter One bank's greensense program and I get ten cents back for every debit card purchase I make up to $120 extra a year. I love this program because I will go to balance my book and have extra cash coming in from my greensense card.

Thats a big WOW. Perhaps I need to go talk to my bank and ask them if they have any plans on adding some sort of program like this. But, our bank is small town community bank and it is just now getting updated on things. So I won't hold my breath!

Wow that's awesome. I use my debit card so much, even for tiny purchases... that would be awesome if my bank had that program. I just can't keep track of the cash I have. I mean, it's in my hands, but I feel like having money on the card is so much easier.

Usually I use my check/debit card to make I my purchases. The only way I use cash is if I have it or if the place as you mentioned only accepts cash or check. I find debit/check cards go thru your account faster and it's easier to make returns if you need to. Firstly the reason your check card may not be working is if the bank you use is not "online" I don't mean internet online but their accounts are not online wich in other words means. Older systems the computer takes a snapshot of your account at say 3am everyday and as far as the system & or check card is concerned that is all you have in your account. SO if you made a deposit that day it would not reflect it til the following business day for the card. If they were "online" the card would have access to your current balance at all times not just a snapshot in time. Does that make any sense? The small store would rather use checks or cash because if you use a credit card or debit card the store has to pay a fee to Visa, Master Card, Discover ect to get their money. It's a small percentage of each sale. And you right they would in turn have to raise their prices to compensate for that processing charge. Wal-mart sued I believe Visa a few years back because the fee's were eating up at their profit margins. This is also why if you use a debit / check card that some places charge you a fee to use it as a debit, because they receive a cut in that surcharge they charge the store to process the transaction. So when you say credit the store gets charged a fee, the banks/processor collects a fee, your bank gets a % of that fee but when you say debit the processor (ie Visa, Mastercard ect) do not get that fee money.

You might be onto somthing with the bank being on older system, espeically mine. They are just now getting around to "updating". Come to think about it, now that you mentioned that, I have had debit cards transactions be a day or two before being duducted from my account. When you look at all the tiny fees, here and there, it makes it seem like it is not worth it. There is no doubt there are mixed feelings on using a debit card verses checks. I have read good and bad apsects of it, and of course it has made me question even more so.. which one is better ?

I've been using debit cards because I don't want to bring so much cash in my purse. I think that is the safest and most convenient way of shopping. It also helps me monitor my expenses well.

Like you, I don't want to carry much cash around for two simple reasons, I tend to loose it easy ( cause I get in a rush ) and as you said, the safety issue, which is a HUGE factor.

I didn't know places still take checks. It sounds like a totally different world where you are. It seems like 99% of places don't accept checks BUT of course they accept cards. It seems so strange that they wouldn't accept cards, especially with how crazy people go with their credit & debit cards. Honestly I like having the ability to have a carbon copy of all of the things I spend my money on, it would help me balance my checking a lot better than I do now. Because all I use is my debit pretty much, I sometimes lose track, forget to write stuff down (especially considering a lot of places forget to give you receipts) and so on. But honestly.. Writing checks is kind of a pain in the butt. I am so spoiled. I hate taking the time to write out checks. I only have to write out about 3-4 a month just for bills, luckily. So, I would say it's a toss up. I like the current system we've got going where I live (in a big-ish city) where most places take cards rather than checks, but checks would probably help me budget and balance my accounts better. Hmm.

I agree with you..it is a pain in the butt except at walmart where you just have to sign your name. Helping you balancing better by using checks, not to sure about that one. If it is just you on the account then perhaps it would, but if you share the account w/ a spouse then I am here to tell you that it wouldn't. I use checks, my husband is a "slider ", and trying to keep it balanced between duplicates and debit card recipts is a nightmare. I would say one day him and I would get it right, but that won't happen until I chose to go plastic all the way and no more checks.

I usually pay with cash or a debit card myself and in truth I've never sued checks and don't think I ever will I just don't see much point in it I'm a cautious spender so I usually have any cash or money in my debit card I need to pay for anything and I'd rather pay with a debit card and know that that's usually the end of it and I can have no worries about checks bouncing or any other things. Maybe my views might change though when I'm married and have kids running about I might then have to start using checks but I still currently don't see to much of an advantage in them.

I think it's great you are a cautious spender, but I seriously doubt your views will change when you get married and have children. I say this, because if you have read the responses here you will see that the debit of course has it's pros and cons, but it is simple and quick. With children, you are going to be seeking out "simple and quick"..anything to make your life run smoothly !

HI sunshine, I don't like the old fashion way of bringing cash everywhere. My bank issued debit card that will give me 5% cash back if I used them in a certain amount. And my credit card also gives me 5% cash back in cash reward for every retail transactions. I never use checks, I always depend on both of my debit and credit cards. Happy shopping.

Goodness at the banks that gives bonuses for using their debit card, that just blows my mind. I feel like I have been sheltered lol, well in small community I guess I have. Luckly, I do not have credit cards so that is one less worry for me...thank god. I like your "happy shopping " It reminds me that I am in need of some shopping therapy but there is that dang budget you have to stick to.:(

Well, I'm only 18 so I never really used checks. I got a checking account when I was 16, and I would use them for things like donations by mail or magazine subscriptions, but other than that, I never used them. I actually have about 5 checkbooks that are over 2 years old that I never use. On one hand, I do prefer a debit card because it's so easy to use. Just hand over the plastic... or just punch in some numbers online. But that easiness and simplicity can also be your enemy. It's so easy to spend money that you lose track of how much money you actually have and are spending. Not that it's that different from a check, but with a check at least you can write it down and be more inclined to keep a record of where your money is going.

Of course I started out with checks, so maybe I just never learned to make the transaction to the plastic..I have a hard time with changes.

Yes, they do take extra time. Well, with Walmart all I do is sign my name which I do like, and many other places are starting to do the same thing. But, I know that is a sign that they are fixing to dismiss checks all together.

I am kind of old fashioned and prefer to write checks. I have duplicate checks, so if I forget to write the check amount in the roster, I like that I can go back to look. If I write a check, I know where my money is going, unlike when I use cash. I think I am a little more careless with cash, so I don't carry cash very often. I do use my debit card and do sometimes forget to write the transaction in the roster. But I do enjoy that I can look at my information online and it is nice that the debit transactions are immediately on your account so you don't have to wait for the check to clear.

I also have the duplicate checks. It is nice to be able to go back and look at it. I tend to make notes on it about the transaction, especially when gift buying. And, I can't count more than a few times that having that duplicate has come in handy.

I think a debit card is easier for me to manage my expenses. Less check writing is always a blessing for me. The purchases still have to be recorded against your bank account, but i think a debit card does make it a smoother transition.

I do not carry much cash either, so I'm a plastic girl. I can see your point with writing checks at the little Mom & Pop stores (it does cost the vendor $ to set up bank transactions), but I always use my debit card and never write checks. Knocking on wood, I have not had a problem with it not being accepted and it is virtually the same as writing a check, only it's instantaneous. No digging out checkbook, pen, ID (sometimes 2); just swipe and go. Also, given the option between credit and debit, I usually choose credit. No punching in a PIN # around prying eyes and my bank issues points (redeemable for merch or $) when using as credit.

See thoughts like people looking over you while punching in pin numbers has crossed my mind. I am terrible with remembering numbers, so using it as credit is a must for me. It might would be a bonus for me if my bank offered the redeemable points.

You must live way in the sticks. I live in a semirural area and there is 0 stores that accept checks. Not a single store excepts them. Walmart won't before long. Too many people write hot checks. Besides it takes so long compared to swiping a card. I am a swiper!

29 Jan 11
Personally, I say it is in the sticks but to ask someone else they may would disagree. I grew up in a large city which I am about 45 min. away from. I'll put it this way, it is nearly 20 min drive to the nearest grocery store. So, that little store I speak of is only 5 min away from my house, and we know the owners very well. They are old fashion and set in their ways..just down to earth people. I know you are right on walmart not taking checks much longer and I dread it ! Thats when I will most likely go to cash.
