My Aunt's American Dream

When I was young I used to had a vacation with my aunt who lives in the city. She married a civil engineer so they have a better life and live in the city. Although they are wealthy enough my aunt really wanted to go to America, and she called this her "American Dream". Getting a US visa is quite hard from a country like the Philippines and at the same time, we have no relatives living in the US. But yet, she did tried to apply for a US tourist visa and as expected she was denied and the personnel in the US embassy told her, try touring Asia first before going to America. (My aunt was never been outside the country at that time). Still eager to go to America, she then tried touring in Asian countries like South Korea, China, Malaysia and Hongkong. Ad I'd said my aunt have enough wealth to do such tours. Now on her second attempt to apply for US tourist visa, it was also the time her engineer husband lost his job. He was 55 years old and can hardly find a new job. With her passport filled with exit and entry marks from different Asian countries, my aunt finally got a 10 years tourist visa to the US. She was so excited and now she is in New York for almost 9 years. She won't be coming next year since her visa will expire. She is an illegal immigrant already in the US. She didn't follow the policy that she must at least exit US every 6 to 10 months. She is now the bread winner of her Family and works as a caregiver in New York. Her live in New York is full of hardship and sacrifice. But then she still told me an hour ago that this is her American dream. If she never left our country her family may have starve. Good Day!

Hi Jamed, It is not just your aunt's dream and there are millions here in India too who want to live that dream... Like our aunt, some of those people who make it turn into reality do have a similar fate once they reach there... After all US is a country and I will not accept that there are only rich people out there. Coming to your discussion, things are going to be tough for your aunt's family once her visa expires... because as you say so. I think she should apply for a citizenship at US and maybe she is granted because of her work and period of stay. Quite difficult as it seems but she can still try. But if she has kids they would be Americans by Birth and that can help her extend the visa or even get a citizenship. That is how one of my friends got through. If it fails, then I hope she has some savings to see her and her family through when she returns back to her native place.
