Does anyone sleep in total darkness?

My son and I were watching cartoons this morning and he noticed that in cartoons, when the characters are about to sleep, it's total lights off. He then asked me why we leave the night lamp on when we're about to sleep. Now I'm not sure if this really happens in real life. I mean, people going to sleep in total darkness. (Except maybe in prisons) I think we usually leave a night lamp on. Some draw open the curtains to let the light from outside come in. Others leave the door ajar so the light in the hallway would slightly illumine the room. I have friends who leave the main light of their bedroom on when they sleep. I'm curious. Do you sleep with some light on or in total darkness?

I have only slept in total darkness once. I was staying in a hotel in Mexico which had once been an old monastery and when you turned out the light there was absolute darkness. I could not even see my hand in front of my face and it was hard to find the bed since the light switch was on the wall not next to the bed. I had to make sure I was pointing in the right direction and that there were no obstacles between the light switch and the bed. Too dark for me. I light to sleep in the dark as it helps promote sleep but I also like to have some light so my eyes can adjust and I can see something, even if only shapes. Outside there is never total darkness as the stars and the moon provide some light and to me that is natural. The total absence of light is not natural. I have sometimes fallen asleep with my bedside lamp still on but I find absolute darkness scary as my eyes always strain to try and see even though they cannot.

It is rare to find total darkness in nature. Maybe in deep caves but even there you usually find some creature that creates its own light so there is some kind of glow.

Yeah, I really don't think a total absence of light is natural.

Oh, I wish, I wish! I spent half my life sleeping in the dark and I suppose I got used to it from a very early age. Then I got married! The wife can't sleep unless the main light is on. That's 100 watts brightness! A night light wont satisfy her. It's a nightly torture for me.

Try getting blinders like they have in movies. That way you won't notice the light.

Hard to comment on that, Mr. Petersum. I'm always a bit wary touching on domestic issues :)

Hi beamer, I sleep in complete darkness. Actually I used with the same since childhood. I can sleep if there is ‘light on’ but my kids won’t sleep if there is any light even in next room. My kids may think that they can play some more time if there is light.

I know the feeling. But in my case, when the TV is on, my son would think that it's not yet his bedtime.

I don't mind sleeping in total darkness. However, there is a street-light on a post right outside my house, so it is never totally dark in my house. Also, I have a light in my living room that I leave on for the dogs when I am not home. I leave it on all, because I don't ever really know if I am going to make it home before dark, and I don't want them to have to sit here with it dark in the house. I tried turning it off at night when I was going to bed, but I would forget to turn it back on when I left the house in the morning, so I just started leaving it on all the time. It has a dimmer on it, so I do keep it turned down a little sometimes, but I have also started using it for the primary light in my living room when I am home, because there is no reason to have it on and have another light burning as well. So, although I do like to sleep in total darkness, I rarely get to do it LOL

yeah I know that they can see better in the dark than we can. I guess that it is just me. I don't like to think about the fact that they are stuck sitting here in the dark. LOL I don't mind leaving a light on for them. It has a dimmer on it, and I usually only keep it on about half brightness, but I still don't feel right about leaving them in the dark when I am not here.

Dogs don't need a light, they can see better than humans in the dark. I bet they have never bumped into anything in the dark!

Usually I can't sleep when there's a light on (I'm pretty much sensitive when there's light and woke up unless I'm really tired) I can deal with a total dark environment especially if I know of course it is safe like my own home. Nonetheless, I lightened up at least one light near the bedroom, say in the living room where my room was just near but I close my room though. This somehow depends on individual or how he is used to be brought up and get used to it.

I guess you're right. We were brought up sleeping with the night lamp on so I kinda got the impression that everyone sleeps with some light turned on.

I turn off all the lights, but leave my alarm clock on so the red glow penetrates the darkness. I can't sleep very well if it is light out either artificially or naturally.

Doesn't it give an eerie feeling, the red glow?

No not really. I'm used to it/ What was weird was one night I could see the time without my glasses. It was fuzzy but I could read it.

Hi. beamer88. No. We don't sleep into total darkness. Me and my husband have a TV into our bedroom and the light from the TV keeps our room lighted up. My son has a night light in his bedroom that lights up his bedroom. If a person sleeps into total darkness in their home, then that is being too risky. A burglar could try to come and break into their home. And rodents easily sneak and crawl around and get into food and crumbs. I need a light on in my house, at all times when it is at night.

Yeah, keeping some form of light on during the might is a great deterrent for burglars. Let's them know that there are people inside. And that's also true with pests and rodents. They seem to love scavenging for food when it's dark :)

I like sleeping when it's dark but I do open the curtains to get a little light from outside and I have a nightlight in the bathroom so I can see a little bit when I get up. I couldn't sleep with a light on in my bedroom just like I can't sleep in the day time.

That's the reason for the night light

Actually, that's the primary reason why I sleep with at least one night lamp turned on. I don't want to grope in the dark when I need to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night :)

We usually don't sleep with the lights on. Though we usually leave the lights on outside the house, just to ward off unsuspecting burglars. And my usually active 4 year old will still be playing when the lights are still on. So it is lights off for us.

I guess most kids really do find it hard to sleep with the lights on. They'd still play around. But I think nowadays a lot of kids do find it hard to sleep without any trace of light.
30 Jan 11
I think that when you are a parent and have young children then the majority of the time there will be some form of light on. This is due to the fact that some young kids don't really like the dark, also for those kids that get up in the night to go to the toilet then the light is useful as they can see where they are going. For me i have no light or lamp on, my curtains fully closed and my door closed, i love completely darkness, it is the way i have always been.

So if our kids get used to sleeping with some lights turned on, then they may have problems sleeping in total darkness when they grow up to be adults.
3 Feb 11
i agree that it is a possibility that if the kids have constantly had the light on then they may find total darkness a problem when sleeping, but as we grow older and develop more things change so it may not make a difference, i guess it just depends on us. I have always had the dark so i am fine with it, i prefer it actually and it saves me money as i am not leaving the lights on often.

Hi beamer! I prefer to sleep in total darkness. I don't like to have light coming into my room when I am ready to sleep. I have my clock and the Cable clock which is bad enough! But, I don't like to have any other lights on. Although, I have gotten up a few times and walked into the wall on my way to the kitchen and bathroom a few times before I was able to get the lights on when I needed them!

we do not exactly sleep in total darkness, we actually leave one light on..like the lamp on. So it would be dim and not totally dark..it is relaxing to sleep in such way.

Night lights such as lamps do make the surrounding feels relaxing :) And that sure is one way to get some sleep. I mean, it's hard to sleep when you're not relaxed or something, right? :)

hmm..yea becoz we need some light when we wake up at the mid-night we cannot recognize anything and might slip and hit and get hurt. So it is a usual practice to use night lamps. In movies they show like that becoz they are moving to the next scene so the lights at present scene are turned off.

That's really one reason we left some lights on when we sleep. We sometimes have this habit of having to go to the toilet in the wee hours of the morning :)

Yes i do, i sleep turning off the lights and closing all the doors and curtains so that when morning the ray of the sun won't get inside my bedroom, i can't sleep with lights on. and i hate to wake up in the morning with the ray of sunlight hits my eyes it annoys me

I know the feeling. That usually happens when I had slept very late the night before. But fortunately, we have trees outside our bedroom window so it kinda lessens the impact of the sun's rays :)
