How do you make it so your disk drive does not always run?

If you mean go into standby that would depend on your windows version. Can you please post the question again but give us details on your windows version and what exactly it is you want to do? Even in standby though your drive is still 'running.' People get under the impression doing that cuts down on the drive not being used therefore expanding its lifespan. Well to me thats a myth as the hard drive is still communicating with the rest of the PC even down to the windows or operating system

Choose one : (for floppy disk drive) - Scan your computer with good Antivirus - Format your active partition and re-install your O.S - Disable Floppy Drive Controller through Device Manager - Disable Floppy Drive from BIOS - Release the cable (data cable or power supply cable or both) which plugged to it. May be these : (for Hard Disk Drive) - Install your O.S to USB flash disk and use your Hard Disk Drive for placing your application and data.
