Hello all smoothie lovers..I am looking for some good kid friendly smoothie recipes without the sugar. I am new at making homemade smoothies, and find myself a bit confused. A few of the questions I have is ; I am correct on the bases for these smoothies can be milk, yogurt or juice, then you just add your choice of fruit ? I have seen some recipes that calls for Vitamin C and flaxseed oil, which would be great for my girls. The only problem is I cannot find Vit. C powder.
I made them their first smoothie the other morning. It was a milk base, plus plain yogurt, with frozen strawberries, but it was to tart, and I ended up adding the sugar. They LOVED it, but I didn't feel like it was that healthy because of sugar. I am also concerned with their light lactose intolerance. I am not sure milk and yogurt is the best way to go with these smoothies. Any help would be great appreciated.

My daughter makes fruit drinks and instead of yogurt she uses a banana. We have been doing some experimenting with different ingredients. My granddaughter is to avoid sugar so we look for sugar substitutes. One we found that many diabetes could tolerate is Maple Syrup and honey. Good luck with your children and their adventure to find the perfect smoothie.

Maple Syrup sounds great, they are not big on honey. So are you saying she uses banana as a base, and not the yogurt ?

Smoothies depends on the person's taste, but usually with sugar. On the other hand, if your children finds enjoyable with it but you think isn't healthy, then find a way to eradicate their habits. First of all, explain to them the best results about taking your suggestions, I mean the healthy side of what you're explaining about. You know what, children can be addicted to sugar, so try smoothies without sugar. The sweetness of the fruit could be the one who'll make the taste, with the aid of the milk. Just adjust the ingredients like; the ice, the milk, put only little but more on fruit like guava, mango, grapes,etc..with lots of vitamin C. Yes, you're absolutely right, smoothies were made up of more fruit, little milk, little ice, but if more milk and ice, it's not good and not healthy. Find the good ingredients that your children likes most and make them a habit for them. Hope it helps.

Well after posting this, I went into kitchen and made smoothie for this morning, and again I had the same problem, it was too tart. I talked with them then about it and explained I was not going to keep using the sugar, I would find a substitute. I actually added more fruit this time to see if there was a difference. I couldn't even drink it. I read where you can use honey and stevia for a sweet substitute, so this I will have to try. Do you think that the Vit.C fruits is just as good as adding vit. C powder ? And I also have to wonder; having the extra Vit C, could it hurt since they also take a vit. C pill daily ?
