A Story Telling From Our Parents When We Were Kids

When you were still a kid, have you experienced a story telling from your mother and from your father? I realized that not all kids experienced a story telling from their parents before they go to sleep. When I was a kid, before we go to sleep, my mother would tell me a story about Goldilocks, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty etc. I met this kid at my friend's house and the way she thought was like an adult. She watched television and she also had a celebrity crush on TV unlike when I was a kid, I was engrossed with most of a character that never exists in real life because it was all from the fairytale book. She's 8 years old. I remember that when I was in 7 or 8 years old, I still engrossed in a fairytale book. Is it okay with you to have a child think like an adult or it is better to have an innocent child? I was innocent in that age and this kid that I met was not innocent anymore. I see her like an adult. What do you feel if you have this child that thinks like an adult?

Hiya ISY, There were at least three Girls in my Class alone that already acted like they were grown up. In fact they married very early. Nevertheless I was grown up for my Age but not so much as these in the sense that they already had Boyfriends were going out with them and such. I never had a Bedtime Story told to me in my life. Never in my life did I have a Story told to me. The only Stories I had told to me was when I was at School in the Infants those were the only Stories I ever had told to me. But I did enjoy them though at that time. Things have not really changed that much you see. There were grown up children in our Class in another one too. They did not have Bedtime Stories told to them either because I know them all. That was a very rare thing for it to happen. Of course we did have the Children“s Series on Television that was on at that time and we made do with that.

I was never told a single story when I was a kid. All I got was TV programmes until they become static. LOL

I cannot say it as eloquently as choybel, but I totally agree. Technology and especially TV and video games, are destroying the innocence and the joy of being a child. I hope that in the future, there can be found ways to use these technology for more good than harm, but meantime, we have the sad picture that you painted, of young children being exposed to ideas and thinking in terms far beyond their ages.

My parents didn't read to me at night but I love reading and listening to stories, that's probably the main reason why I learned reading at around 3 or 4 years old. I am very proud of this fact too. Anyway, I think that technology has greatly interfered and revolutionized so many things around us. I just hope that these things would bring more good than harm in the future for all our sake. I believe that it has become our responsibility to maintain balance by sharing the experience to the younger generation, don't you think so?

I don't remember having stories read to me as a kid but I soon learned to read myself. There wasn't much else to do! We didn't have a television until I was about ten. I do remember listening to the radio a lot. Did anyone else hear "Listen with mother"? Now with my child, she doesn't like story books so much although she was forced to hear them anyway. Instead, she prefers me telling her about my early life. Whatever, she has become a reader herself and enjoys a book when she is not working on her computer. Is she like an adult? In some ways yes but in other ways no. I wouldn't call her innocent but balanced.

The maturity age of the present generation is much lower than the age at which we matured. Like they have a bf/gf at an age of 12 or 13 and i had my first gf at an age of 18. They have got into smoking and drinking plus they do physical stuffs much earlier than us. In the process, they are losing the childhood innocence and fun that we had.
