I dont really understand why the schools do this. There was supposed to be snow and freezing rain last night through this morning. By about 9pm last night they had cancelled all the schools in the area and it hadent even started. I dont think it started until about 12am or later. I remember times where they predicted huge storms were coming so they cancelled school and then the storm never even came. For that reason I think they need to wait until at least the early morning before cancelling school.

Schools and other institutions find it better to let people know early and so they cannot always be right. Just a small discrepancy in a predicted weather pattern can make a HUGE difference to the actual weather in an area. Schools must rely on weather forecasts in order to plan their day. If they waited until it was actually snowing before they decided to close the school, there might be many people for whom that would be too late.

Your right it makes it easier if they think a huge storm is coming to cancel school well ahead of time but then we have to go later into the summer to make up the snow days. They usually leave an automated message on the phone around 5am but last night it was on the local news station all the delays around 9pm or so. I know that them cancelling school ahead of time was for the safety of the faculty and students so its not like I'm upset they canceled school it just seems like it would be better to wait until the storm actually hits in case it doesnt actually arrive and they have no school when they could have been in school.

I was aware, now you mention it, that they have to make up 'snow days' (though I think that is only after a certain number).
Perhaps this storm was a special case because it is enormous and was forecast to dump a LOT of snow (with high winds) over many states. I certainly would not want to wait if I had been in charge of a school! Better to waste one snow day 'in case', in this situation.

My son's school often cancels school during or even before a storm. I am all for keeping the children safe, but sometimes it is just a bit annoying as the parents have to make changes in their schedules to accomodate watching their kids. And it is specially annoying if the storm turns out to be a false alarm.
