Why Indian team underperforms in ICC tournaments ?

Best batting line up in the world ,perfect record in bilateral series ,achieving victories out of nowhere, out thinking the opposition are some of the qualities of Indian team due to which they have earned no 2 position in ODI and no 1 in tests, but for some odd reason they don't play according to their potential in ICC tournaments .Debacle of 2007 and the champions trophy is a perfect example of team India under performing. Is it because of tremendous media hype and pressure of fans ? but this team doesn't choke in test cricket where pressure is ten times more than limited overs cricket.Matches India lost in two main ICC events since 2007 were against Bangladesh and Pakistan respectively and if we closely analyze the matches , we can easily make out that India played poor cricket rather than those teams outplaying India.I dearly hope that Kirsten and Dhoni come up with some plan to eradicate this unknown problem because yet again the hype is tremendous , whats your views will India manage not to choke this time against weaker opposition this time ?

I think Indian suffers to much in injuries. Indian team always suffer from lack of all-rounder , but this time we have got a good all-rounder like Usuf Pathan. I thing this time India will perform well...the total home crowed is with the team this time.

You are correct, Indian cricketers are not the fittest certainly and they have injury problems .My personal thinking is that they aggravate the injury, when you have a niggle and you continue playing , you are likely to get major injury. But on a positive note things have become better and i hope no one gets injured during world cup. Thanks a lot for your response.

If you observe properly, India always start off a tournament poorly... Be it a bilateral or any other series.... And the 2007 world cup had just 3 matches in the first round and there isn't much India can do once they lost the first match... Similar was the case in champions trophy.... But this time its not gonna be that way... India are certain to go to the next stage... And if we see the T20 matches India lost just because of the weakness they had against the short ball... But in tests there is no such problem because of the likes of the Fab 3 and ofcourse Sehwag(who always carries a shoulder problem for the major events)....

There is no need of such a worry this time dude.... India are very very well prepared this time... If you see, Sehwag has commented that this first match is going to be the revenge match... Also, Dhoni has kept stating the fact that they are not taking Ban light.... So, I hope they start off very well... And this time, Yusuf is in kind of a good form... So, I personally feel that Yusuf can single handedly complete off Bangladesh...

Yes this has been consistent factor with Indian team , that is to start poorly. But if this time they start poorly and lose to Bangladesh i don't see them go more than quarter finals as losing to Bangladesh will will not only effect the confidence of players but also will eradicate any kind of fear or nerves other teams have knowing that India is almost unbeatable at home. Thanks a lot for your response.

nice discussion. one thing that has been said about this team is when their back is against the wall, they surprise everybody by fighting it out. 2007 bangladesh has been a surprise element.sri lankans played better cricket.on the bright side,we scored the highest world cup score against bermuda and equalled the record of 18 sixes in one match. this team has a good combo of youth and experience and playing infront of home crowd with the serious threat of windows getting broken if they under performed, well they will atleast try for semis

Thats the point exactly , Indian team performs well when they have enough motivation .Indian team in 2007 didn't have the correct team combination also Dravid was bit of a defensive captain.Decision of Sachin coming a no 4 and not playing Kumble against Bangladesh was rubbish.Dhoni and Kirsten are experimenting from last two years and finally they seem to have found right team combination and solid bench strength.Like you mentioned if they make it to semis there is a good chance of Indian team winning this world cup. Thanks a lot for your response.

Indian Team are slow starters. In every series they loose the first match & then come from behind to either square the series or win it. Unfortunately in ICC matches, these losses hurt. The loss to bangladesh is a classic example. Team India also lost one match only because of mendis, but after that they have learned to tackle him. No team can win at all times. I feel that Indian Players always play under a huge burden of expectation.

Yes good point ,they indeed are slow starters, even in 2003 they played poorly in first two matches against Netherlands and Australia. This time India has tough group, SA and Eng have done well and they will put up a tough fight, WI have always been surprising India and who can forget Bangladesh with whom India will be playing their first match.I think they should give their best right from the first match as losing to Bangladesh will hurt India's chances immensely , also it will dent the confidence of players.Same thing happened last time in 2007.So they need to start well ,yes no teams can win at all times but Indian team certainly has the capability to win this world cup without losing a match this time ,all they have to do is handle pressure well. Thanks a lot for your response.

You are right dubey our cricket team usually buckles under tremendous pressure from the fans particularly in major I.C.C. events. This was a normal thing a few years back but since the era of Savrav and Dhoni this had changed a bit. We had learnt to fight. In the period we could reach the finals of world cup in 2003 in South Africa under the leadership of Savrav but succumbed to much better side Australia in the final. We could win the inaugural T-20 tournament in South Africa under the leadership of Dhoni. The old ghost came back to haunt us again in '07 world cup in Caribbeans getting out to an unfancied team with the worst performance of the decade. We again went down in champions trophy getting out similar way. The team appears to be in great shape this time and tournament is being played in India that will give an added advantage. Let us leave rest to the destiny.

I cant understand why a team who is so competitive in a bilateral series gives it away in major tournaments.I was not expecting anything from the team in Asia cup for the same reason , but they surprised everyone .Similar kind of approach is needed for coming world cup.If India tops their group they are likely to get NZ in quarterfinals and hence their chances of making it to the semis will be increased. In this world cup the format is quite similar to 2003 world cup which suits major teams and not minnows .I hope Indian team doesn't crumble under pressure this time. Thanks a lot for your response.
