I've just responded to a question regarding our taste buds changing as we grow older and that made me think. Why do most children dislike eating vegetables? Did you also hate eating vegetables when you were a young child?

I think their taste buds are not yet fully develop to appreciate the taste of vegetables. I think kids only love sweets and anything with MSG on it.

MSG is a killer but from where we come from, almost everything outside is MSG that's why we mostly have home-cooked meals.

The taste bud of a child is so much different from adults. But we can give them vegetables under the guise of other foods. For those babies, we give them vegetables thru pureed means. But generally, children don't like vegetables. It is rare that there are children who likes vegetables at an early age. I was like that before, until i gave birth to our only child. After giving birth, it's as if my palate have changed overnight. I now would like to eat almost all types of vegetables and my meal isn't complete without a vegetable for side dish!

Why does a child's taste bud favor sweet stuff? Is it genetics? And to think we're really supposed to be a non-carnivorous specie :)

Well some studies show that genetics may actually have to do with it. Children have this bitter-sensitive gene present that may be responsible for a child's aversion to bitter tastes. http://nutrition.about.com/od/nutritionforchildren/a/bitterstudy.htm.

Well, I have three children. When the first was born, I prepared her every healthy recipe I founded. She loves vegs. When the second one was born, he just wanted milk, I gave him maternal milk for a year, with a bit of fruit, a bit of vegs!! He didn´t ate vegs as the first did, and I passed it off. Now a days, he is 10 and dislike vegs. When the third was born, I told to myself "you are not going to repeat the mistake of passing off that they do not enjoy vegs" So... if my third child was willing for milk, I didn´t give him, instead, I put him infront too much vegs. Now a days he loves vegs most than all. He enjoys shamelessly all kind of vegs. I´m so happy with him. And I have to encourage always Gus (the second one) to eat them. LoL ... Blessings! ...Dainy

Hehe I didn´t want to see him cry... I know I know I know... I was wrong. But he didn´t want them... I just wanted him happy all the time... ohhh no!! I know, I was wrong =( . When I try hard, I make him eat potatoes and spinach soup. And poultry chicken soup with veggies, but just smashed! With salad cookies. And the third one its every veggie he finds! Even raw vegs. Uff.

I guess a little firmness can make kids eat vegetables. But what made your second kid not want to eat veggies?

When I was a child there were a limited number of vegetables that I would eat. However, now that I am older I will eat almost all vegetables (I will however, admit that I've never been able to eat brussel sprouts). I think that the reason that the number of vegetables that I would eat as a child was limited didn't have anything to do with my taste buds but rather with the things that my parents offered to me. My children will eat almost all vegetables because both my husband and myself eat a variety of vegetables.

I guess if parents show their child that they too eat veggies, he might eat it as well. But for some, it seems to have not effect of them whatsoever. Unless of course they're not given any option. I mean, if you only serve veggies, they'll be forced to eat it :)

I wish I could say the same. We're quite the opposite. Most of the children I know and see seem to have some aversion to vegetables.

I like vegetables very much but I am not a vegetarian! I like meat also - fish, chicken, beef. One of my fovourites vegetables are tomatoes and potatoes! I enjoy eating salad from tomatoes. For potatoes - i like it boiled and frayed. i can't live without potatoes!

Hi. Well, that's good to hear. I hope that when you have your own kids, they'd also like vegetables like you do.

We had a farm and grew our own veggies. For a snack, we would grab a fresh tomato or an ear or two of corn or maybe a few greenbeans. They tasted soooooo good fresh off the vine. Maybe that's what parents need to do - have a small garden and let the kids help with it. The absolute best part was when the watermelons and cantalopes ripened...yummy. The only veggie we hated picking was okra since it could sting your hands, but all of us loved it when Mama fried it up. We might have candy once or twice every six months. The huge treat for us was white grapes. Mama would buy two pounds and dole them out to us about 6 at a time. They lasted longer and tasted a whole lot better that way.

Hey, that's a great idea! We actually have planted some tomatoes, eggplants and 'malunggay' (Moringa)in our backyard. I should let my child help in maintaining the garden like watering the veggies or have him plant one of his own.

I don't even know..Maybe because most of them have a sweet tooth. I think I also hated vegetables but still had to eat them si9nc my mom taught me not to be too picky in eating. Food is a blessing.

Bulls eye! That was me! I never ate vege when i was a kid. I was sickly and skinny those days but my mom did not force me to do so. I don't like the taste. I remember attending a birthday party of my classmate in gradeschool. Her mom and my mom were also colleagues. All the vege in the "pansit" (chinese noodles) on my plate, i removed them all and placed in one corner. So the next morning, her mom reported me to my mom that i did not eat the vege in the pansit. When i reached my teenage years, i started eating selected vege only like french beans, cauliflower, broccoli, potatoes and carrots. Thats all. During my early 20's after realizing the benefits it gives to the body, i started to eat vege, it just automatically came, my tastebuds accepted it and enjoyed it. Now my niece and nephew, 11 & 14 yrs of age don't eat vege since then, as well as fish. So what i do when i have the opportunity, i will mix the vege with meat, like meat balls or spring rolls. Same with the fish, i will make fish balls for them or croquettes, and they will eat it.

Wow, it took you that long to finally eat vegetables? :) I also removed the veggies in my pansit when I was a kid. I guess a lot of us did.

Definitely yes. I too didn't want veggies when I was young. It probably has to do with the taste. Children really don't like bitter and bland tastes. They prefer something sweet. So for us to let them eat veggies. We need to add flavor to the dish. Some people use veggies as ice cream flavors so children aren't aware that they are eating veggies in their ice cream. Some really sliced the veggies into tiny bits, so children won't notice the veggies in their dish. My son, loves french fries, so instead of buying processed fries, I use real potatoes, sliced it to thin pieces like mojos. He just loves it. Children find vegetables to be boring. So what we can do,make the veggies more presentable and appealing to their eyes. There are slicers available in shapes which we can use to slice the veggies. If you have fun with it and try new recipes, children would have a positive outlook about veggies and will see them as fun and tasty and not something that they are forced to eat. Children also watch what others eat. So if family members eat veggies, they most likely would also eat veggies. We can expose them more to fruits and veggies rather than junk foods. Children don't like to be forced. Forcing children to eat veggies, would likely make them not to eat veggies. Instead of telling them to eat their vegetables, we can say that they don't have to, but children who do , grow up big strong and healthy.

We tried preparing veggies differently each time. Sometimes we even made it look like candies. But once my son tasted it, he clams up :) Well, that was when he was 3. He now eats some veggies but still hasn't gotten used to the leafy ones. By the way, thanks for the link. It was really helpful.

Yes,I did.I liked to eat meat but not vegetables, because there's too little meat and too much vegetables for me when I was young. And now you don't like eating vegetables just because you kids are too coddled!

I guess it's because of the smell. I can see how my 7-month old son's eye brows raise, cringes & face contorts often times, haha!~ He likes pumpkin & carrots though. Spinach has slowly become an acquired taste but the introduction of broccoli conjured such an image, hahaha!~Up till today, I fancy meat over vege & I guess my son follows after me, haha!~My wife loves vegetables though.
