How to clean leather handbags?

I carry a big, roomy and a beautiful handbag that my sister gifted me 2 years back. It's still in very good condition. However, the sheen has been fading and also the metal embellishments have gathered little amount of sticky dust. I am planning to clean the metals - that wouldn't be any problem at all. But, I am not sure how to clean the leather. It's an expensive bag and I just love the fact that it accommodates everything from nails to cow!
Obviously, I want to lengthen my association with it.
Any tips? How do you clean and maintain your leather bags?

HI!
Before me, others appears to have given you some very good suggestions to retain your leather bag intact. You may try those, however, I am of the opinion, try to get a similar new bag, whenever possible because leather products have their own life and it will wear out after its life gets over. Cleaning products may temporarily save it or prolong its life but I am afraid, it will not last long forever.
All the best, I wish you could use is as much as possible.

THis is a very relevant discussion for me too mimpi dear! I have a similar handbag, a very expensive one, a large one with 3 big compartments in it and it was specially chosen by my son and given to me.I cherish it and have been using it like mad;recently I was wondering as to how I can polish it and retain its original sheen. I was wondering whether I should use some leather polish for it and gently clean it up.In fact I was wondering whether I should buy one less expensive one for my rough use and keep this special one inside.

That's a good idea. It not that I haven' tried using another bag for daily use but somehow I have gotten so used to this one that everytime I keep going back to it.
Why not try the leather cleaner from a good leather goods store as most here have suggested. I am planning to do that. You should too since it's much cherished. Keep me updated Kala.

hi mimpi I have seen people with expensive cars that have leather upholstery clean that with armorall so I think it helps not hurts'
good leather. I myself have a favorite leather handbag and use a
special leather cleaner that sprays a foam onto the leather then'
cleans then polishes too. guess we all have given about the same
information really . have fun as it will last for many many years.

I have alot of hand bags. I clean them alot with the spray "Armor all". It kind of cleans and protects the leather. Makes it look all new again. If you have trouble finding it check the auto department. I used to clean the interior of my car with it too.

Hi Mim, pick up some leather cleaner, it usually comes in a foam and will clean up the leather nicely. You just put some on a rag and start cleaning. Once the dirt is gone, you rub some more until the shine is back. Enjoy many more good years using the handbag from your sister. Hugs

Cleaning leather can be risky because the cleaning process can change the colour or appearance of the leather. The best method is to determine the type of stain and the type of leather.Always test the cleaning materials on a small invisible part of the leather article before proceeding on the whole item.
If you are uncertain what products to use,you can take some assistance, because improper cleaning can lead to some damage. You can always take your product to some professional leather cleaner and ask him a couple of questions on how he plans to clean the leather, will your item remain the same colour or cover the stain.

Thanks for the useful tips. There isn't any kind of specific stains though. Just little bit of dirt settled over the years that makes the sheen fade. Testing before using the cleaner is a good idea since no way I ant to discolor my bag. Thanks a lot.

I've heard of various homemade ways of cleaning leather, ranging from nail polish removers, toothpaste, combination of vinegar and linseed oil. Even a light lather from a moisturizing soap helps. But make sure of cleaning it with a dry cloth.
However if you want to be safe, I would suggest getting one of the leather care products that are locally available. Amway, from what I heard has some good quality leather cleaning products. May be you would like to give one a try.

Those are good ideas. I haven't used any leather cleaning products ever. May be I can look for it here. I have heard of Amway and know some friends who use its products regularly. I should ask them.
Thanks.

You’ve probably found the best thing to use on your bag by now. I use Mr Sheen which is used to clean wooden furniture. I clean my leather bag and shoes with it. I would love to know who first discovered how well Mr Sheen works!

My first thought would be to get some leather cleaner that people would typically use to clean leather furniture that they have in their house. That would help with the sheen of the leather and it would definitely be something that would be safe for the leather of the purse. The other thought that I have that might work would be to use something that you would use to dust in your home to clean the handbag that you treasure.

I do not have the leather cleaner at home and considering buying a good one. We do not have leather sofas anymore and not many leather household things. But I can buy a small size of the cleaner ( they are expensive) for my handbag.

I buy leather cleaners and care products from bag retailers. They work wonderfully and since I have some rather expensive bags I don't want to experiment too much, so I don't accidentally ruin them or something.

You are right! I should have a look at the nearest leather dealer.
