I was with a group of students this afternoon and listened to the discussion of two youths on beauty pageants. One was planning to join a local beauty pageant and the other, while respecting his decision to join one, expressed her opinion regarding beauty pageants saying that this is actually discriminatory against women.
One reason advanced was that women were paraded before the viewing public like commodities and the other argument is that it discriminates against those women who do not possess the qualities to be beauty queens but are intelligent, successful, and socially aware and involved.
The one who wanted to join a local beauty pageant in defense said that this actually promotes social issues (environment, etc) and the cause of women as not only objects but possessed with intelligence, socially aware and involved.
Personally, I don't watch beauty pageants but the discussion was very interesting. In fact, the group simply listened to the two discussing.
What about you mylotters, what do you think about beauty pageants and women. Just curios and I hope this curiosity won't kill me like the proverbial cat.

It is a weird competition even though it happens worldwide. It's like a cult.

Hi gorillafootprints. This is the first I heard beauty pageants referred to as weird. Hope you don't mind if I ask why you see it as weird.

It's just my POV that thinks it is weird. I really don't know exactly but I feel something is weird about it.

Some one ask what's in the crown? I dare say more than pearls and diamonds or precious stone. It's a recognition of our being as a woman. Recognition as a piece of beauty., a work of art, as an integral part of society, as a doer of good cause and deeds, as a instrumental for unity and global friendship. I may sound like a contestant in a beauty pageant but that's how I see it aside from being entertain by the parade of beauty before my eyes!
Not all the time you can see a bunch of beautiful ladies parading
before you!

Hi Edna. True, beauty queens are symbolic but don't ordinary women do all the things you mentioned. Though there is that, it is a feast for our eyes to see all those different types of beauties like sculptured faced. For the few glimpse I had, when my daughter watches one, I adore their gowns. It is really a wonder to behold.
Thanks for your response.

I think it sucks because its t elling young women you must be beauty pageant pretty to be worthwhile,to make a success in life, you have to be
skinny to the point of anorexia and bubble headed and verey glamourous or you have failed. thats an unhealthy mental outlook. Most of the ones I have seen sound sort of bubble headed and not too high on brain power.
I would rather see a pageant based on intelligence and looks come in
a low fourth myselfl.

Hi Hatly. I totally agree with you. We're putting wrong images into our young women and while I was listening to the arguments I thought that the young lady who plans to join the beauty contest did not know much about the gender. It's so up there in the clouds.
While I did not join in in the discussion, I told her I was going to send her some readings on women. At least she was open to the idea.
Thanks for your response.
