"Real" work from home jobs?

February 5, 2011 7:26am CST
I am staying at home with my boy and am getting a bit bored. I'm also taking some graduate classes but I can only study at night when my son is asleep. I would love to put my son to daycare a few hours a day just so he can interact with other kids but to do that I would have to have some income. What kind of work can a person do from home? I'm not talking about these online sites that pay you, not that I find anything wrong with that. I'm talking about "real" work where you are working for some company or companies. I have a degree in political science and my background is working for a social non profit organization.

I've been working from home since March last year by taking on writing jobs and getting employed to US companies through odesk. It is a real job - jobs rather since I have 4 ongoing contracts :) - where I get paid by the hour and it would certainly help you earn an income to support your son. I'm sure you'll find something to give you a stable source of income online since I was able to succeed in doing it. Good luck!

Nice to know you are int0 it. I am in odesk too. Ive been working there since I was studying last 2009 until I graduated. And now I am working full time in odesk! So happy to receive invitation interviews and get hired, meet my teammates and the learning and experience of the job that was so fun! So happy to meet my fellow oDeskers here. Actually, mylot helps a lot to us opportunities seeker. Not only in the earnings we get by simply doing some activities here but by the messages shared in the discussions that would help us to be aware and find new opportunities we haven't heard yet in our Online ventures. We are taught to beware to some sites and be aware of what we are joining. Everything online are so fun and exciting! Good Luck and Congratulations! Happy earnings to us! :)

I have a question how is getting paid $3 for the hour or even less as I saw on the site worth working for them? Clearly your time is worth more than that is it not? Wouldnt you rather physically get up and go make more money else where? I just want to know your reasoning behind it. It just seems like waaaaay too much of your time for only a measly $3. Where as the companies profit off of you 1million times over..

I did sign up for Odesk too, but so far no luck in getting a job yet. I guess the employer mostly prefer experience contractor than the newbies. But I will keep putting in my application just in case I might get lucky one day. Right now, I am earning a bit on Microworkers.

Hi sigriol! Like you I am also staying at home but my children are all grown ups but I find it boring when I am left at home so I am also looking for ways to earn online while at home. I've retired from office work and it was really hard to stay at home doing nothing so might as well make myself productive. I'll be keeping track of this discussion and I wish to find online earning opportunities here.

Try Teletech dot com and West at Home. They both hire people to do Customer Service for large companies from their homes. You could end up taking calls for US or Home Depot. They pay about9 or 10 per hour but if you have to work from home - consider them. They are reputable companies. Best of luck to you.

Hi sigriol, I am planning to work from home so that I could spend more time with my children at home. I am currently looking around for a half day job that I can do while my kids are at school. And the other half of the day, I could do my online jobs at home and maybe start off again with my homebase business. I agree that you should let your son have interaction with other kids and that would give you some time to yourself. All the best to you.
