Developing News ... Mubarak Has Resigned As Leader of Egypt's Ruling Party

Being reported today on MSNBC, in an effort to distance himself from Egypt's ruling party, Mubarakk has resigned as leader of that party which the Egyptian people feel is corrupt.
In your assessment, is this a mere symbolic gesture?

this? I have not heard anything about him resigning from any position. Would this not mean he can now leave with his head up? I guess he is still the president. I heard today that they are callng for the workers to go on strike. Thanks for the update. I feel I missed a link. "o)

.....Hi again, It seems that Mubarak cannot resign his position as leader under the Egyptian Constitution so everybody retracted their stories about it as the entire thing is confused. Not only did he resign from the party but his son and a whole group of others did as well. Now the protesters are calling for a worker's strike which could further damage an already crippled country and cause violence to start up again. Take it easy.

I think it is just another step towards his departure. His days are numbered and he knows it. He may just be tip-toeing out rather than running for the door to give time for a proper political process to evolve. His resigning as party leader may well also be him trying to save the NDP itself from the political dust bin.

Agreed! This to me is a very desparate dance ... reports are that he has not resigned as President of Egypt, just that he has resigned as ruling party leader. Apparently, he is cute enough to attempt to distance himself from his own party, that same one that declared HIM president in an obviously tainted last election ... more specific the last 30 years of elections!!!
