Just like any sports, only way to get better is to be involved in it. I'm not saying just jump in with huge amount of money. Approach it like you would any other sport. You can always jump right in but you can make a lot of mistakes without knowing all the rules & you might even get hurt. If you start playing football without knowing anything about it, you'll do things against rules & at the end, you can loose the game for your team. Poker is no different. Except that instead of whole bunch of people in your team, you're playing for yourself. If you call down every single hand with no strategy, you'll end up loosing all your money. But if you study the sport, learn the rules & strategies of the game, you're betther equipped to deal with different situations. Go to a book store or library & read up on poker. Some of the professional poker players have written books. Learn the terms, like differences between bullets (pocket rockets), cowboys, snowmen, pot odds, limp ins, blinds, & so on & so on... Then learn to be a real good listener. Reason for that is when you're sitting in one of the hold'em tables, there will be a lot of "table talks". Better you can follow them, better you'll understand what they mean & more importantly, better you'll understand players. Somebody at the table might say, "You called the river with snowmen when there's XXXX out there on the board?"... or something like, "That guy is such a donkey. Last time, he called the pot down with 7 2 off..." Those small table talks will tell you little things about each players. But before all this, you have to first find the games. Internet is all good but if you really wanna learn the game, there's nothing like a live game with live people. Most players have ego. They will be more than happy to "teach" you if you go there with no expectations & be willing to lose small amount. Make sure it's a small friendly games so it won't get out of hands. Matter in fact, look into local bars or restaurant/bar, sports bars. Some of them have what they called, "free roll" games. They do that do draw business. Games like that don't cost you anything, except food & drinks you have there. Think of it as your weekly night out with the boys. Play few hands. See how other people handles different hands. You'll start to get a hang of it. Then when you feel comfortable with it, try going to a casino with $100 & sit at a very, very low limit, or low blinds, table. Or low buy - in tournaments.
