First off, welcome to mylot. Being the small fish in the big pond can be challenging when one is used to being the big fish in the small pond. Work diligently and be optimistic. If you truly learned in high school, you should have a good foundation of basic knowledge that will serve you in competing with your fellow students. Language is a part of one's identity and if you are to learn a new language, you must also make that language a part of who you are. Read English, write English, watch television in Engish, and communicate with English speakers. This will help you to absorb the language and make it a part of your identity. Good Luck.

Remember, when you learn English, you will no longer be who you are. You will change. You will become a bilingual individual.

That is exactly my point. Do what you can do but do not overdo. Enjoy your study as well.

Hi Locoyou, To be a good student , first thing even before you work hard for youyr degrees and grade you must learn to respect your teachers because you can really learn from them much more than books can teach you. You have to gain knowledge from them so give them a lot of respect so they take extra interest in you. Then ofcourse you have to plan your day and hours and make a weekly timetable after your school/college hours for self study and on sunday you have to revise everything you learnt in whole week. Last sunday reveise what you learnt whole month and this way you would be ready to face any exam much before exam time and no one can stop you from getting what you want. Your english wont imporve here on mylot for that you have to learn proper grammer.

Thank you for your advise. I think it's important to make a timetable. In university, many students waste lots of time, and that's a waste of life. I will improve my English in a proper way.

I was an excellent student (graduated from my Master's degree program with a 3.96 GPA (4.0 is perfect)). I found some links that may help you study, but the most important thing is to make yourself interested and engaged in learning. I tape-recorded all my lectures and then went home and listened to the tapes and made notes so I could concentrate on what the professor was saying and wouldn't have to worry about taking notes in class and being distracted. If you want to learn good English, the way to get a feel for proper grammar is to read a lot of the classic literature. For American English, try Nathaniel Hawthorne, Melville, Emerson, Thoreau, and other writers. For British English you can't go wrong with Dickens, Trollope, and the Bronte sisters. Here are two links that can help you: http://www.ehow.com/how_4738227_improve-grades.html http://hubpages.com/_38opkgokhrt1t/being-a-good-student Best of luck!

Oh, you are really excellent! I'm major in computer science and I'm very interested in it. But my English is not very well and most good books in computer science are written by English. It's really a obstacle. In next year, I will work hard to improve my English. Thank you for the links.

I don't think that you need to worry about being a good student... you are already a good student and you got admission in the best university shows that you already have the potential required in a good student... just keep your goal in mind and work towards it... everything else will fall in place.... best of luck.

just study and focus, don't over exert yourself. Or stress too much, it will make your studying worse. Mylot is a good way to improve communication skills. I suggest read out loud and try to listen to the words you are saying.

i think you want to be a good student,so my suggestion is don't cross the ethics of a student, every one know the ethics of a student,if you don't know that means you are not a student, every one know them but most of of them will over cross them with having no will.

Dear locoyou, I once was like you. In less than a decade, I was able to earn a Master's degree and settle with a job of my choice where my passion and heart is found. May I share you a piece of my mind. You just have to play with the game. Be sensitive enough in deciphering the philosophy and environment of the school. Make your psychology work. You have had a good start and you must continue by being better then later you can also be the best. With this, you can push through with your plans of pursuing a master's degree in America then you life will be smooth sailing just like me. Bon voyage on your journey... :-)

For me, the best way to become a good student is to listen to your lesson instead of just going to classes then study the subject when you go home. Listen to your teacher during class, and when you get home, just take a look at all subjects you had during that day for like 2 hours or maybe less. Learning during the lesson is the best way possibble and checking them at home just makes it better. That is all you have to do, no extra effort or anything. For exams, well, just be careful not to forget to study any subjects that might be useful to you.

Hello locoyou! Welcome to mylot! This is my third day here as well. Writing is a great way to improve a foreign language, i believe so too. About school, i'm a little older than you, but still a student...in a second university. I am experiencing the same problem as you are. When i was a student in Veterinary University i was the best in my year, I even finished first. The situation changed when i entered my first year in Medicine University (human this time). Here all the students are very well prepared and even if i've already studied medicine (in animals), this is a lot different. I didn't think i would need to work that hard, i said to myself i have so many previous knowledge so i would pass the exams easily. I was used of having only the best grades...but as the year progressed i realized i need to work hard and to be constant in my efforts to make it. That's my advice to you. Until you get the pace and the way things work, study every day and cover every subject, so you'll be prepared when your first exams come. Also take care to eat and sleep enough and take vitamins. Good luck to you and be your best!
