Well as a student, here's what I believe: it doesn't matter if you come to class early, late, or on time. Sleeping during class is rude. If, for whatever reason, you are too tired don't go to class on that day. Don't go to class and sleep...stay home and take a nap.
In my opinion it is better to have an absence then it is to get on the teachers bad side by sleeping while they are trying to teach you.

I'm one with you as regards your opinion. I hope students out there would realize that. Most students seem to be around for the sake of being physically present but mentally absent and unprepared. Most if not all teachers find it embarrassing when such an incident arises. So to all students out there who seem to experience the same predicament, better yet be marked absent rather than creating those ear splitting noises in the course of class discussions.

Yeah! At least one of my teachers has it written in their syllabus that if a student falls asleep in class it may be counted as an absence. So she definitely won't put up with it!

In other words, there must be a clear cut policy as regards sleeping incidents by students in class and they must be fully aware on its consequences and repercussions. After all, they're the ones losing a lot in terms of ideas and concepts shared then gained through the course of the class discussions.

If I was a teacher, I really had no idea what I would do. I would find it a bit disrespectful. But then again, its really not my future being ruined. However, to set an example, I would perhaps decide to punish the student in question for sleeping in class. If some of the students saw that it was in fact okay to sleep, then more would do it.
It always astounded me when I went to school and people used the class as a nap time. Granted, there were times where we had a free period but not when the teacher is talking and trying to educate. Especially when the teacher is really trying and actually trying to educate you. So really, stay awake, you might accidentally learn something. You just never know what you learn something that will help you later on in life.

Thanks for your piece of mind. I'm somehow equipped when a similar incident takes place during the teaching-learning process in class.
