Tea Party gets it right--at least this time

The House Republicans scheduled a vote to renew some of the Patriot Act. The vote failed--because some Republicans voted against it. Not all of the Tea Party Republicans voted against it, but enough to shoot it down. They said it gave the government too much power and infringed on personal liberty. Good for them.

This time the SOME of the tea party members of the House got it right along with most of the Democrats and basically ALL of the "liberal" Democrats. That's the point most people seem to be missing here. Who's have thought tea partiers would agree more with Nancy Pelosi and Dennis Kucinich than with Speaker Boehner and Michele Bachmann, herself a self-described tea party member? I guess my point is even if all of the tea party Republicans had voted against renewing the Patriot Act it still would have passed without the Democrats. Annie

You're splitting hairs to make your party look good Annie. Let's be real about this. The democrats had a supermajority and they voted to renew the Patriot Act, not once, but TWICE. "Who's have thought tea partiers would agree more with Nancy Pelosi and Dennis Kucinich" They don't agree with Pelosi at all because frankly, nobody knows where she really stands on the Patriot Act. She's voted for that piece of garbage multiple times. They agree with people like Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich who have voted against the Patriot Act EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Taskr, I'm not trying to make "my party" look good, I was just pointing something out. If it weren't for the Democrats the Patriot Act would have been renewed. Annie

It is strange to see that alliance. I am not a fan of the tea party. they seem to do a lot of ranting without much in the way of practical ideas. But credit where credit is due. They got this right.

Only the true "tea party" reps voted against it....the posers, like Bachman (I told you all she was a fake!) voted for it. The whole thing needs to be scrapped and re-written in a minimalist and constitutional manner. I am all for securing the country, but it should not be done at the expense of our liberty and this unconstitutional piece of garbage legislation is likely one of the most liberty robbing laws to come along since the Alien and Sedition act.

Well we all know that it's a fight now whether the Tea Party will coopt the republicans or the republicans will coopt the Tea Party. As for the Patriot Act, I view it the same way that I view the Obamacare bill. Destroy it and rewrite it in accordance with the constitution. The unconstitutional crap is too firmly embedded for it to be "fixed".

I was REALLY ripp-pissed to see that Allen West voted for it. Looks like another poser.

Well we know that a few posers had fallen into the Tea Party as well they are a really open movement that isn't that hard to go join and say you are a part of it due to how extremely lose it is.

It really needs to be looked at, line by line. Some of the things in it are great, but most is trash.

Like what? I mean really 99% of the thing involves null and voiding rights that the people have. And completely side stepping due process.

Like allowing phone taps to be issued for people, not individual phones. It is completely moronic to expect law enforcement to seek a new warrant just because the suspect changes phones.
