I just got a quote for a second key for the Mercury I just bought.
$215!!!!
$215 for a key that should only cost $2.
Why do we need computer chipped keys? Because phlegm eating pieces of goat entrails who pose as actual human beings invest this world. Car thieves, you are nothing but
pustular bits of cancer on society. You are the single biggest cause of inflation and don't deserve the breath you waste by living.
I don't care if you are a soldier, fire fighter, good father or anything else that is good and heroic in our society. If you are also a thief, you are good for nothing... period.
Now go fall in a hole and rot, while the rabid sewer vermin insult their urine by letting it touch you!

That's absurd! What are the chips for, anyway?!
That's just another reason I prefer older cars with no computers. I can actually work on them and keys are cheap. Of course, they're also easier to steal but they aren't exactly high on the list of most scum bags, are they? Older cars without computers will also still run after an EMP.

The chips are an anti theft device. They make it so a car can't be started without the key and the properly programmed chip.... well, unless the thief has some trick to defeat it all.

It's only a matter of time. If they'd put as much energy into something constructive as they do to crime, they'd probably make a fortune.

That is why I will never buy a car with a transponder key. I only buy used cars anyway; but, even some used cars have transponder keys. And, actually, you got off "cheap"; because, the average for one of them is $250.
You can buy a new car without a transponder key; but, only certain makes and models still use standard keys.
Another "security" feature that some loan companies use is a satelite connection to the vehicle you purchase and if you are even one day late making a payment they remotely shut off the vehicle and it will not restart until they turn it back on for you. Of course, the entire time it is "off" the satelite is sending a signal to your car and this causes your battery to slowly drain; so, when it is turned back "on" you need to get your car jump started!
