Guns or owning guns for security

They say that "it's better to have a gun and have no use to use it than not own a gun when you have to use it" What's your opinion on this? Do guns really make us more secure? If you are one of those that do not believe that owning guns will make you safe then what other alternatives do you do to protect your self, family and property

I suppose in this day and age it comes in handy for safety purposes that is. However safety is the key. I do know a family where the husband thought it was wise and wife did not. Well one day one the 12 year old son accidentally shot it and injured his 8 year old sisters arm. Although it was an accident, again I only stress that many do not take into consideration the hazards that can occur right in their home. On the other hand locking it up securely does you no good if you need in an instant as no one will allow us time to be astute when the situation arises. So it can be two sides of spectrum, and having had two kids a single mother I prefer not to own one and thus ask for blessing and hope I never regret it.

@jwfarrimond Wow that is sad and terrible, I wonder how he was able to cope and go on in life after such a horrid accident. @xfahctor, indeed caution and safety seems to be an issue, even with good intentions.

I have to say I liked the response about the grits...excellent choice of weapon by the way. The point being that just about anything can become a weapon. A fork can do a lot of damage, hot food, especially starchy foods not only do immediate harm but stick and continue doing harm. A knitting needle is a deadly weapon in the right hands, as is something as innocuous as a hair dryer or an ordinary drinking glass. For the larger portion of the population the prospect of doing massive harm to another human being is a daunting one. Even in times of extreme stress there are many who would fail to 'pull the trigger'... Your personal security is one of vigilance, preparedness...know what items are in your home that could in the event of an emergency where such defensive action would need to be taken, secure the entrances and exits, know what sounds, smells etc are usual and what ones aren't. Make sure there is a way to communicate with authorities or at least a neighbor. Most of all be confident in your abilities.

Yes I've seen a documentary where any ordinary thing can be used as a defensive weapon, but certain ordinary things could really be deadly in the hands of a trained master such as a deck of card that were thrown like a Ninja star knife Yes sometimes some sort of prevention is better than cure
