Slow down on yellow light

The basic rule when approaching a yellow light is to slow down since this would eventually turn to red and thus you have to stop. I've been driving for almost half my life now and to this day, I still notice people apparently stepping on their gas pedals whenever the traffic lights turn yellow. Have you done this? What do you think prompted people to speed up instead of slowing down when the lights turn yellow?
