Tax Questions: Head of Household

I was reading a bit about head of household, so there can only be one and they have to have a dependent to claim head of household? My boyfriend and I own a home together and pay everything right down the middle, equally, including the mortgage. We never get much back in taxes. Should one of us claim head of household? Once we get married, how much of a tax break does that allow us? I don't know much about taxes, obviously, and this is the first time for me owning a home.

i dont know much more because i do mine on taxact which is idiot proof lol.. i know with my bro's taxes and he has my parents as dependants (their age) so he is head of household but he isnt married.. im married and have been since i had any taxes to do so im not sure how much you'd really save but their is supposed to be some.. after you get married you might wanna invest in buying the software cuz i know taxact if you paid for extra stuff it would compare your taxes as filing joint and seperate so you could see the difference.. i think they are giving a tax break in the first year of buying a home but unfortuantely they friggin did that after i had bought my home a few years lol.. we always get something back because we claim 0 on the paperwork when we get a job so it takes the most out possible and will over pay so you shouldnt have to pay anything tax time

To claim head of house hold you have to be single and have a dependent. Mother, Father, children or step children can be claimed if you provide half of the care for at least 6 months of the years and they live with you during that time. http://taxes.about.com/od/filingstatus/qt/headofhousehold.htm

Your best bet is to claim head of house hold and did you know you can go to H & R block and they will do a simple form for free...also many other places will also....You can get that tax incentive by doing HOH.
