What Would You Do?

Hi all, I just had to ask this question. Today it seems someone took a yellow cab in New York City and left behind a bag filled with over 100K (thats over one hundred thousand dollars) in jewelry and cash. The Cab driver returned it. Of course this is a nice honorable thing to do. And of course many would argue that since he was the driver he really had no choice since the valuables would be traced back to him. But what if another passenger found it and not the driver? What if it had been you? Honestly, would you return it knowing it could possibly not be traced back to you? What Would You Do?

The first things that will come in my mind is i will take the money and will not give back this. But latter i will return it.As i don't want to do any sin. So batter i give that bag back.Otherwise i can't forgive myself. With that bag money may be i will be rich but i will never be in peace. So if it had been with me then i do the same that the driver have done.

Really? Some might argue that if the owner is leaving that much money and jewelry around, the owner might not miss it. Of course one hundred thousand won't make us rich. But it sure will help pay some bills. I think about it and i still don't know what I would do. lol

To be completely honest, I would have to say I would keep it. My family is having such hard times right now, that would be my biggest reason for keeping it. I know the honorable thing to do it to turn it in, as has been stated already, if they just leave it behind then they have plenty more where that came from. I am not a thief or anything like that. Just have to take care of my own family!

I have to commend you for being honest. Many would say they would hand it back and not. I agree with the part about leaving it behind because they have enough. I would probably keep it too. lol

My brother in law and I were just having this discussion! Lol. He said he would take it and I said I would give it back. I would feel soooo guilty that it would be more painful to take it then it was worth. I eat myself up about everything so honestly it really wouldn't be beneficial to me, I would probably end up in the hospital sick with worry and guilt if I kept it. =) That's just me though...

I think most people would give it back. But I'm with your brother in law. lol After all, what is someone doing carrying all that cash anyway?

Yeah, my brother in law was saying if they had that much that they didn't remember they left it then he was taking it quick. Lol

I don't really see how the loot could be traced back to the cab driver. The person who lost the stuff may not have even had a clue where they left it. "Finders keepers. Losers weepers." lol. A few years ago, I would not even hesitate in saying that I'd turn the money over to the police because it's the "right" thing to do. Things have changed though. The corruption among the police force is pretty rampant and there's no guarantee the rightful owner would actually get their things back. If it had been me who lost all that stuff, I definitely would report it as lost and let them do their jobs in trying to find it. Follow the proper protocol's for searching for it etc. If I had been the one who found it, I would have taken it home and put it in a safe place. Not tell anybody about it. I'd wait a couple of months keeping an eye out in newspapers, tv and such to see if there was a report about it. If reported, I'd contact the place that did the reporting and try and get in contact with the rightful owner. I'd give it all back. If after a couple of months I didn't see in some way that someone was looking for it, I'd keep it. Gotta wonder too.......100k in cash and jewels???? Interesting combination. Sounds like maybe a robbery in the first place and the perp ran off in a cab......You never know.

I'm right there with you Ptower! lol. Bills first, play second! Mai Tai's on a white sandy beach somewhere! Seriously though, it had to be some sort of theft. No honest businessman (or woman) would actually leave that kind of thing in a cab!

That would be shocking to see but I would return it cause I could get in a lot of trouble but hopefully whoever it owns too will give me some reward money or something :D

That would probably be best I know, but I don't think I would turn it back. lol That streak of the devil inside me I guess and the fact that the bills are due very soon. lol

hi there :) awwww i cant wait for the day when i can actually ride in a New York yellow cab and be with my love :D hehehe. well if it was me, honestly i would return the bag, because i will feel guilty and i believe in Karma hehe. i have a story, i found a cell phone in the taxi, i did not tell the driver about it, then just a few days after that, wasnt even a week, that cell phone that i found got stolen from me, good thing it wasnt my own phone that got stolen or something that was very valuable. i want to be this man who is all over the news and a very good example to everyone in my country. its the same as what you said that happened to him, he picked up a foreigner passenger from the airport but he left his bag full of money in the cab after dropping the passenger in a hotel. when the driver realized that there was a bag, he immediately went back to the hotel and gave it back to the foreigner. the driver was given a reward and was given a recognition by our president and also a reward. so i realized that money is not permanent but what you shared and showed will remain forever. i dont think i can be happy if i took the bag knowing that there is someone being miserable because of what i did.

Well that was a touching story. I believe giving the money back is the right thing to do. But when faced with the situation, will most of us do the right thing? I think most people would. I don't know if i would though.

I would definitely be tempted to just grab the bag and take the money and the jewelry, but I guess I would feel some kind of remorse after that,so I might change my mind and return it,and so become a little hero in my community.Honestly,I really can't predict how I would behave;anyway,if I found some identity papers in the bag and I realized that it become to a filthy rich person I wouldn't returnit since it wouldn't affect that person too much, but otherwise I might return it.Anyway, human behaviour can be unpredictable,so my final answer is:I don't know what I would do,I will probably do what my reason tells me at that moment.

Very good response. One might say i will do this or i would do that, but what is boils down to is the situation. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it right?

Right,it's one of those life situations in which almost anything is possible, but a decision has to be taken.Whether it's good or bad, time will tell.

conscience talks most of the time. i would give it to the driver. he will be the one who'll be traced so i will give it to him. it is so easy to assume that with that big money and jewelries, the owner must be very rich and losing them would not mean a thing. but what if it is the opposite? there are many situations that could also be unexpected like the money and the jewelry were intended to be sent to another person via the person who rode the taxi. he would be accountable to it most definitely if they get lost. or those were the last money and jewelries the person has and will be used to start life over again. how would it be possible if they get lost? i just do not feel comfortable taking and using another person's money.

Well, at first I would feel that I was lucky having found those valuables in my taxi or somewhere else. In my present situation when I am in need of source of income to help support my family, I will consider it blessings from heaven. I may get interested with it but as days passed by I will be worried and my conscience will not give me peace. I am not used to getting things not of my own so definitely I will be having sleepless nights thinking about it. I will definitely give it back to the real owner for my own peace of mind.

I don't know. Seems to me if you were a passenger getting in the cab and finding it, you would probably keep it. I might also

Of course the right thing to do is to return it. First I would put myself in that person's position. Then I would know how it feels like having lost 100K together with some jewelry. Maybe that might help in deciding whether to return it or not. :)

You know, i try to put myself in the person's situation and i still cannot come to terms with carrying around those valuables. I cannot see myself carrying that amount of valuables in a paper bag in a cab. Well, I really don't know but truth to tell. I would have probably just kept it.

Hey, its up to you. What more noble than paying your bills. Whether you are right or wrong is up to your personal values.

It is better to return valuables such as that to the rightful owner. Claiming something that does not belong to you may have a greater consequence. Ever heard of KARMA?

Funny thing about Karma, it is open to interpretation. For example, perhaps the individual stole that money and it was Karma that you found it. You will probably do more good than bad with it.
