Do you think 529 plan is a viable one for future schooling?

Okay, if you have children, would you contribute some money into this 529 plan for the future college tuition? I heard so many great things about this government subsidized plan for future education, but also heard some bad news regarding to this plan wasn't work at all from newspaper. Basically, a lot of states already abolished this 529 plan, and only a few states sustain it. So, what do you think of it? Also, if you have a 529 plan, it might hurt your future college financial aid application. Because the financial aide officer will look at all of your contributions and other factors. 529 can be one of them.
