I am sending my daughters in a private Catholic school, my eldest is in her 2nd year in Highschool while the youngest is in grade 2. I'm lucky because even if the tuition fee is very high, my eldest is enjoying a tuition fee subsidy from the government availed through the school's effort amounting to Five Thousand Pesos until she finished her High School. Lately, the school announced that it will have an additional Five Hundred Pesos increase which will be a great help for me. The subsidy is for students who finished their elementary in public schools but which to study in private schools in High School. It is also given to private schools students who are doing good academically. Do you enjoy the same subsidy in your children's school?

My daughters both go to UP, and all UP students are scholars... so yes, my daughters' education are subsidized by the government. One is graduating this April, and that means payback time. I did remind her of her duty to her country, as she is in the process of establishing her career.

She has got to get her third year high school grades high, especially in Math, Science, and English. 40% of the UPCAT is about the grades, according to rumors... Brush up on Filipino, too, because there are several questions in the native language. And she has to know the current music, fashion, animation, those things come up. In other words, talk to your daughter all the time about everything under the sun and she will get to UP.

Really? this is here in the Philippines?! right? Well i think that is wonderful... it would actually make a lot of parents yearn more to have their kids study in private schools because of the subsidy.. 5000 is a huge money, it can be used then to support her school needs.. i hope the government will think more of what they can give to their people.

Yes chiyosan, it is really in the Philippines. The slots varies, in my daughter's school, they have a limited slot of 50 students who graduated from public school and 10 slots for those who came from private school. It helps a lot especially that there is a 10% increase in tuition fees.

No, my daughter finished her high school in public school and in college now, being one of the "iskolar ng bayan" in UP. This is one way of the government to de congest public high school but I don't totally agree with this approach. The money used to subsidized private school could have better use in upgrading the public education system. Those private school can fend for themselves since most are on the commercialization of education. This is also a way to admit that parents do not trust public education and would want to have their children in private school, a big big slap on the face of us (teachers) in the public school education!

You may be right but please don't take it personally, it is not an issue of the abilities of public school teachers, but rather if the public school could still accommodate every students who still wants to study. In fact I salute public school teachers for doing well in teaching inspite of their not so good condition in school. As a mother, I am forced to pay the big amount of tuition fees in private school because I wanted her to be safe, she was so innocent and young and still very dependent on us. Besides, her school is near my office, I could easily ran to her for any problem.

I do not have kids but I am happy that the government is doing something like this. Kids need education. I even hope that free education comes with good quality. I do not intend to offend anybody but this is what is happening is some countries. I think that additional effort should be given by the teaching staff. Basing from what I have seen before, public schools have more time with their students outside the room doing other things. Some schools have their students help out with other activities like preparing stuff for an upcoming event. I see nothing wrong with this as long as they do not get out of focus on their lessons. I think that having the commitment to really help the students learn is what the teachers should have.

Yes, i know what you are saying... quality education is very expensive and hard to find these days that's why we, as parents, are always guiding them in achieving their goal.

I just hope that kids take the guidance positively. Kids are different these days. They are a bit rebellious. Most of them just realizes their mistakes when it is too late. I hope that this does not happen to our kids.
