Clear your mind

Can anyone really clear their mind? I can't. I've tried. The more I tried to clear my mind, the more intense it get. As soon as I close my eyes, take slow and deep breaths, the silence sets in. Everything around me intensify. I hear everything. Random thoughts comes to mind, What did I forget to do today or Oh, I need to do this and that. People I know from friends and families alike tells me don't stress too much, clear your mind. I realize that when I try to clear my mind, I clutter is some more and therefore I become more stressed, now stress even more because I can't clear my mind.. How does one clear his/her mind? Can it really be done?
