Friends and Politics.

It's like this, if we are really friends, we should be able to drive to Madison, WI together. Take our places in the opposing demonstrations, make our voices heard with those on our side of the issues. Then get back in the car and have a great drive, enjoying the road trip.

Never made much difference to me. Politics is such a small part of who and what I am. Music, for example, is a much greater passion of mine. I have and have had friends of all political persuasions. Hell, my last girlfriend was an out and out avowed Marxist. I saw you post something on facebook once I'm going to feed back here because I thought it was a great post. You said words to the effect of, "I don't care what your politics are or what we may debate, all are welcome at my back yard fire."

I remembered it because it touched me. Besides, I have a fire pit and in my neighborhood, all are welcome. I do not allow the neighborhood drama there, I don't care who you get along with or don't, the fire is sacred turf. It is a place that mankind has communed by since man first learned to use fire. My fire is a peaceful place for good music, good food, human companionship, drinks and community.

Whatever happened to middle of the road types? And all things in moderation? Why does everything have to be so extreme? There are shades of grey after all. I am glad that the demontrations came off peacefully and that no one was damaged...

I agree and I do this with a couple of liberal friends. Usually the day ends with them questioning their own beliefs....

"I'll betcha that wouldn't happen with me!" I am pretty sure I have had you doing that a few times and you know it...

I totally agree and I think you and I could do it, don't you...lol? Also, I believe we could actually hold a conversation about politics on the ride and, contrary to what some other posters have written, I don't think I'd end up doubting my own beliefs or accusing you of starving babies either. I think we could have a pleasant ride and some stimulating discussion even if we had to agree to disagree on a number - probably a LARGE number - of things! Annie

My best friend of 46 years could not possibly be more different than me. We have different political views, lifestyles and we basically are complete opposites. So why has this friendship lasted over so many years? We just like each other regardless of our differences and maybe because of them. I really don't know but we made a pact when we were 12 not to let anything ever ever ruin our friendship. If we have a disagreement then one of us has to be big enough to make the call to save our friendship. The rule also is that the person who doesn't make that call..can't hang up. Basically we had to focus on the friendship itself over and beyond the problems. It worked for us. 46 yrs and still best of friends...still hang out...it can be done if you really value the friendship itself

Exactly, we are more than just our political views.

You have absolutely no idea how very very different we are. I'm the 70's hippy and to this day she has never done so mutch as pot. our political views and pretty much everything are extreme opposite. I listen to rock and alternative...she listens to country only. We actually laugh at our differences. Pretty much the only thing we have in common is our respect for each other and we both like coffee. We find humor in our differences.

I completely agree. I was VERY happy to hear that the counter protest that went along with the state workers protest over the weekend went completely preacefully. They estimate over 40,000 were there saturday. Not one fight. Nothing. No arrests. Completely peaceful. THAT is the way to disagree!

I find the easiest way to be friends with a liberal is to never discuss politics. It's very difficult for them to stay on topic and any discussion that challenges their points goes off on emotional tangents until somehow I am responsible for children starving in Africa. We could drive to the protests together only if we listened to music all the way there and back, discussing only where to stop for lunch.

Depends on how far left they are in my experience. I've had a couple liberal friend who have become libertarians after realizing what liars and hypocrites their politicians are. Note that I didn't say they became republicans, they already knew about the lies and hypocrisy from that side. I did have one former coworker who I thought was a friend ditch me entirely when I didn't support Obama. She even once said "How can you be a librarian and NOT be a democrat?" I didn't even talk politics with her during the election. She just saw on my facebook that I wasn't supporting Obama and that was enough for her to cut off any friendship with me.
