Why Is There A Light In The Fridge But Not The Freezer?

We have one of those fridge/freezers with the fridge being at the top. It has a light inside so I can see what I'm doing if I need to go in there when it's dark lol. However, this isn't the case with the freezer. No light in there. Does anybody know why? My theory is it's because of all the water (ice) in there that - if it came into contact with a light that becomes faulty, the freezer might blow up? I've really no idea! Would it be the same for a frost-free version? Does your freezer have a light and if so, what make is it because I want one.

I haven't seen a freezer that has it's own light yet.. and your discussion really made me stop and really think about it. And now I can't stop thinking why indeed that there is no light in the freezer?! the only theory I have is that, freezers are usually located at the top of the fridge, so it's maybe nearer the lights of the house, so you won't need an internal light? Hahaha. I have no idea if what I said is even logical. Hehehe. Hopefully someone can answer your question so I can sleep well tonight. LOL.

Been racking my brains for some imaginative answer to your topic.... and while reading all the other replies, I got disappointed on the real/ scientific answer, cause it's so ... blah. Hahaha! I was hoping to get a more catchy reason why there are no lights in the freezer.. oh well, atleast now I know why, and if ever somebody asks the same question.. I know the answer already. LOL!

Your response made me laugh my friend, thanks for that. Well, you won't be able to sleep tonight either because our fridge is on the TOP, not the bottom lol. Also, I do know that some freezers DO have lights but I don't know why they have them and mine doesn't. It's all very odd and it's doing my head in now! Haha!

I've got a fridge with the freezer on the top. It is frost free and the freezer has a light:) I've never used a single door fridge (where the freezer is inside)....neither has my mother. I've seen my aunts and mother-in-law have fridges like that and defrosting is a pain. They also have a tray at the bottom that collects water and needs to be cleaned regularly. Since my freezer does have a light, I'm assuming that what you said about the light could be true. I think that since the freezer is colder than the fridge, the light bulb might burst with the cold. The light inside my freezer has a different cover...not sure if it is for aesthetic reasons.

Wow, you are so lucky you have a light in your freezer! Is it a frost free model, just out of curiousity?

Yes, it's a frost-free model. I've seen the hassle people go through trying to clean the one with the frost....and I've always been used to seeing my mom use the frost-free one. We even got one from Kuwait when we moved to India because there weren't any frost-free refrigerators in the Indian models. We now have many...and I have one from the LG company.

Yes, I've heard of LG. I think the next fridge/freezer we have will be a frost free version. However, due to the freezer always being relatively full the frost doesn't build up as much. The stuff flattens it lol.

I've never heard of a fridge/freezer combo with the fridge on top. All the ones I've seen either have them side by side(like mine) or with the freezer on top. Mine has a light in the freezer. Every freezer-on-top style that I've seen has a fairly small freezer compared to the side-by-side style like mine. Also, I've never seen a freezer-on-top style with a light. My theory is that those small freezers don't need a light because their aren't shelves or drawers in which to stuff a lot of items into. In other words, the freezer is small enough that the outside light from the kitchen spilling into the freezer when the door is open is enough to illuminate it. Also, because those freezers are small a light might take up some badly needed space. Of course, like I said, this is only a theory and probably not a very sound one at that. To answer your last question mine is a Holiday. I've had it for a long time. Don't know if they still make Holiday anymore but all the side-by-side styles that I've seen have lights in the freezer.

Holiday is a cheaper brand made by one of the big name manufacturers like Maytag or Whirlpool. I think Maytag made it but I'm not sure.

Our freezer is the same size as the fridge and both are quite large. I do know what you mean about the small freezer compartments but it's definitely not like that. I've never heard of the Holiday brand but it's a nice name, I like it!

Hey Janey, Wow I never thought of that you really had me thinking why. I think I might be able to answer your question I think the reason is that the temperature will be so low and so the light wont be able to power up and maybe die or pop. Think about it. Two temperatures fighting each other HOT vs COLD. With Hot and Cold Air alone it creates storms winter storms and rain storms hurricanes. When HOT and COLD air hits each other it starts to create lighten lol. I know the light in the Fridge doesnt pop but it does get warm. I think when we put up the temperature in the Fridge the light goes out maybe. I think Today with new ReFrigerators they have a light in the Fridge and Freezer lol.

I have a double door fridge with a freezer drawer below. Both the fridge and the freezer have lights. The make of my fridge/freezer is Kenmore. I'm not sure they sell those in the U.K. I got mine at Sears. P.S., I like it a lot and have had it since 2005. I haven't had any problems with it either.

Usually, you leave your freezer open for not very long, and also your freezer usually aint really big, so a light will just take up some space needed for stuff to put in the freezer!

Our freezer is quite big actually but I take your point about leaving room for all the "stuff" lol. Sounds logical to me.

I've never seen a freezer on top with a light. Bottom freezers and side by sides do, and my freezer, freezer does, but I've never seen a top freezer with one, because, I suspect, they don't expect people to 1) go in there with the lights OUT in the room and 2) not be able to see because its closer to eye level... Now, my folks had a side by side and one day I saw the light on with the door closed, so we pulled the light out and they never had a light in it again. I guess, if you don't want to turn your kitchen light on, you will just have to "braille" your way through your stuff.

Our freezer is at the bottom 'cos we like to be awkward. In actual fact, Mum loves our fridge/freezer as she has a fridge with a freezer next to it and my Dad hates bending down to find stuff in the fridge. If they had one like ours he wouldn't have to bend down.

I would think that the coldness would make the lightbulb freeze but I dont know really since it can be extremely cold outside and the lightbulbs outside dont freeze. It would be awesome if the freezers did have light bulbs in them. Down celler I have a big deep freezer and its very dark down there. During the day when the light shines in I can see whats in the freezer but at night I have to turn on an extra light by the freezer just to see whats in there and even then its hard sometimes.

Yes its a big chest freezer down in my cellar. It was only like $75 I think when we bought it new at wal-mart. I think thats where we bought it. Its big it holds a lot of stuff in it. I buy things in bulk and put what I wont be using for dinner that week down in the big freezer and put the things I will be using soon in the upstairs freezer which is attached to our fridge.

Is that a chest freezer you're going on about? My in-laws have one of those and keep it in the garage. Why they don't extend the kitchen I don't know 'cos they're loaded lol.

Hi. Janey1966. We don't have a light in our freezer either. I guess the freezer can become too cold and this will make the light bulb freeze up. I need to have a light into my fridge, it helps me to see my food much better. When I was staying at my in-laws house almost two years ago, the light in their fridge blew out and it was very hard for me to see. I prefer to have a lighten fridge. It looks more better and attractive.

Hi cream97. I know what you mean about lightening the fridge. At night I don't have to put the kitchen light on if I go in the fridge, which can be very handy for some late night, sneaky snacking lol.

Very interesting post & answers, haha!~Ours doesn't have a light bulb in the freezer either. I guess condensation has got to do a lot with it. Even if it doesn't "pop" or explode, condensation will also spoil it. We just got our fridge fixed the other day. The timer wasn't working & thus rendered the defrost function null. Ice started to build up & the bottom compartment wasn't cold. Our fridge is already 10+ years old & the repairman said the heater to melt the ice, one of the connecting wires even properly insulated has condensation issues & there's vapour within & it won't last for very long, depends on our luck, haha!~Well, something along that line

Rightly said & sad to say it's due to greed that all these electrical have such short lifespans ow. The repairman told us that even the heating coils in the fridge - they don't make them like they used to. They used to use good copper but now they have mixed it with alloy. Even the heat conduction is not that efficient anymore...

Wow, it's great that your fridge is lasting so long. A friend of Mum's had hers replaced recently and she'd had it about 35 years! It's true! I'm afraid electrical equipment isn't built to last anymore, otherwise all these companies would go out of business very soon!

That is actually a good question. I've never thought of that before! I guess it's just not as easy to put a light in the freezer as in the fridge. And furthermore, when you want a midnight snack, you're more likely to go to the fridge, I think? ^^

I haave a GE side by side freezer/frig and have lights in both. Frost free. Had it for more than 30 years. Suspect the engineers figured out how to make a freezer light that would not break in low temperatures early on, but never figured it would be needed if the freezer is small. I have a smaller fridge with the freezer on top that does NOT have a light. Since the frezer is quite compact (one big area with a ice cube shelf) the makers probably figured the light would complicate the layout too much. This freezer did not come with shelves and it didn't take me long to realize that I needed some sort of shelving to be able to find things in the freezer with or without a light.

I reckon our freezer is quite big (by UK standards anyway) and I know that some freezers that size do have lights in them. I suppose it depends on the manufacturer. GE must have been quite innovative seeing as you have a freezer with lights that you've had for 30 years. Wow, that's impressive my friend!

Here's an engineer's point of view. In a freezer the temperature is below freezing point. The light bulbs which can be used in such cramped places are incandescent bulbs. Which means the light you get out of these is because the filament in the bulb gets white hot. What will happen is, when you open the door, the bulb will explode as the glass cannot withstand freezing temperature on the outside and extreme heat inside. One solution is "Piped light" where the bulb is located somewhere else and the light is piped in with optic tubes. The spread of the light and the intensity (Lux and Lumen)is an issue here and so is the cost. I have tried it with LED (Light emitting Diode) lamps available in the market. The freezing temperature made this a very inefficient light. This for a frost free fridge. Normal fridge will compound the problems.

maybe because the freezer is too small that you don't need light to get what you want. Second, when the temperature reaches zero everything in that compartment freezes and it will destroy the bulb if there's one which may cause an accident. I think the bulb won't last long when temperature changes every so often and in so short a time.

That's huge for a family of two . I wonder how much you're paying for the electricity bill. So my first guess is wrong, which reminds me of the fridge used by celebrities on MTV crib.

That is an interesting question there Janey. I think you are right, Freezers go to very low temperatures and where there is a light bulb there is either thin elements or gas of some sort that would not respond well if it was to freeze. On the other side there is a light in our microwave, but we have to replace that quite often. Maybe that it due to the extreme heat. Yet our ordinary oven the bulbs seem to last years... so my theory doesn't work there. Best keep a torch by the freezer perhaps.. But there again, we don't use it unless the light it on. I've just remembered! We had a light in a chest freezer that we had many years ago in the garage. That seemed to be handy on winter's evenings when I went out to get some stuff for a meal. I guess really, I don't know the answer to your question! _Derek

Awww, but you did try Derek. I wonder if James Dyson would know, not that he manufactures such items (give him time) lol. I have a light in the oven and the microwave as well...plus the fridge..so why a freezer should be exempt I do not know. It's all very strange!
23 Feb 11
You got me thinking because one of my prior jobs was working for an ecommerce business selling white goods and I cannot remember ever seeing a freezer with an interior light. But then taking a step side ways I use to work for Sainsburys (my first job many years ago) as a warehouse man and as such use to take in deliveries of frozen goods. Now the deep freeze storage areas in a supermarket are blinking cold yet they have lights in them. So I am sure having a light in a freezer is possible but not deemed necessary due to the usual layout of draws rather than shelves.

It's seems a few people have been thinking about this one and I'm glad because I'm not the only one!! Mum goes into a walk-in freezer at work and I know for a fact she switches a light on to go in there, which is just as well because she's not the best at finding her way as she has no sense of direction! I think you may be right about the "drawers" situation in household freezers, although I've been told in this very discussion that some freezers do have lights. Perhaps us Brits are behind the times..as usual!!

lol Janey, I have never given thought and went to check my own, and nope no light in mine either. I am going to take a guess that maybe the bulb would not be able to withstand the temperature.

The temperature of freezer is too low,if you install light bulb whose heat energy may bring about mist ,It wouldn't achieve the role of lighting. In addition ,in case the difference in temperature is great, the bulb will explode.

My freezer has a light. All the freezers I've had all came with lights. How old is your fridge. May the bulb is out. (HA,HA) I don't think your theory is accurate. I say this because you can also spill something in the fridge and have the same problem. I like the way you think though. I think it would be exciting if the freeze blew up.
