what Karaoke file formats will play on dvd player?

perhaps i've posted this question previously on the wrong interest type. we here at home are very fond of singing with magic mics (as some call the karaoke/videoke device) and we're hoping to get new songs to add to our selections. but i don't know what type of file format to download or convert into so that we could play it on our dvd player. what file types could i use and burn into a cd/dvd that'll suit best when played in a dvd player? or maybe there is a software or program that could help in getting songs from the internet to play with the dvd for karaoke/videoke? i've been searching places nearby where i could get new song choices for us but there seems to have a bit of lack of updates with the stores nearby. so i hope to get new songs by downloading through the internet. i know this is possible, as anything is through the web. i'm not really a computer guy so any advice will do. thank you in advance for whoever could solve my tiny little problem..=)
