Who do you save? Mother or Scientists who has cure for cancer. Results

I saw this question on answerbag.com and i reposted it, but what really caught my eye were the results of the poll. 60% would save their mother and 40% the scientist. One reason was that a cure for cancer would be probably found soonly after the scientist died, but that you only get one mother in life. But in the meantime 1000 of other moms could die, too, so isn't it a little bit too egoistic? Or is it even just an human instinct that they would save their mums? Oh, and feel free to write who you would save.
