Turns in your life that you would never have imagined?

I would never have imagined as a teenager marrying a Veteran, we were mostly war protester types back then.
I would never have imagined that getting a teaching degree would have led me to teaching in a prison for 13 years. Then leaving that and becoming a correction officer for a county jail for 3 years. Also volunteering for Civil Air Patrol and doing paramilitary stuff to help our country (and in my squadron's case, our youth).
I certainly didn't imagine owning a home near the Canadian border.
So what twists and turns have you had that surprised you or you would not have thought would be part of your life?
My husband said I was a surprise turn in his life. He had given up on getting married and he got married anyway.
No, my imagination was more the Peace Corp, getting a good teaching job teaching little kids, and living somewhere between northern and southern USA. But realistically, because of my family, I thought I would probably still be up here and I am. But the rest has been a surprise.
What about you? What twists, turns, and surprises have you had?

You're funny! Just the way you put it. But I love it.
Can't wait until this summer when I and my friends here start talking about gathering wild food. Do you do that?
Gosh I'm sure glad you're my friend. You add so much to conversations here.

I set myself a challenge last year to try and learn more about wild foods, and I did learn to recognise quite a few more things. Most of them were green leaves either to add to salads or to cook like spinach, as most of the more common berries and the like I already knew. The salads were normally excellent and I really enjoyed being able to have a variety of different things in the combination. Most of the green leaves, when cooked, were a bit of a disappointment though. They were OK in small quantities, cooked as part of a stew or a soup for instance, but served as a stand alone green vegetable I wasn't impressed. I guess that is why man has spent thousands of years cultivating vegetables!
The wild foods I gather most regularly (I'm not sure whether they have the same names where you are!) are blackberries for jams and deserts, chickweed which is great in soups and makes an excellent salad base, nettles which are just good for everything and I often dehydrate, fat hen which grows like crazy here and makes an acceptable green veg, and sorrel which I love in salads and in soup.
What sort of things do you gather where you are?

I'm a serious lamb's quaters salad fan. Chickweed is awesome with egg salad.
If you like cooked spinach, then cooked greens, esp. mustard greens are great. I don't like cooked spinach. But I will eat it hidden in lasagna. Try them there. Good idea since lasagna is so expensive (do you know what I mean by lasagna?)
We have wild raspberries, blackberries and crab apples.

I never imagined I'd willingly go back to school and now I am beginning to see why...Though I am doing well in math, for some reason my instructor didn't give me my password to take my second mid-term that is due tonight at 11:55....So it will be interesting to see what happens now. I hate to see any points taken away since I been ready since lunchtime to take my exam, and yet can't..:(

I used to hear that a lot from adult learners when I taught at a college, "Never thought I'd be here, but here I am."
Part of why I'm doing this discussion is to open people's minds to the fact that life usually turns out to be different from what we imagined.
I hope the math situation turns around soon. I don't think you should be penalized for your instructor not giving you your password. Did you look in your junk mail? Take care.

No I didn't check my junk mail for a couple reasons, one, her messages never get sent there and for two, even if they did, I check my school mail where her mail goes as well. Since that mail is in the schools own program, I find it impossible to believe that it'd get lost there.

Well, maybe she forgot or thought she gave it to you. The more you write about this stuff, the more I'm glad I never took a college class online and until I know they've got the "bugs out of it" I don't think I will. Take care.

My life has been full of unexpected twists and turns. I have lived on both side of the fence so to speak in more ways than one. I have been very poor and happy..not poor and unhappy..and then a little of each
I have had unexpected travels to places I would have never thought I would go. I have met people that have impacted my life in a manner that I never expected and then I realized I have impacted people as well...never knowing it until much later though. I am still trying to find my place in the world while staying established for my children.

Cool!
I hope some young people read this stuff. Many think they have their lives all mapped out and it doesn't work that way. Would be nice if someone let them know that.

Welcome to Mylot! I see a one by your name. Am I the first discussion you've answered? I'm honored.
Yes, my life has been a lot different than I dreamed it would be. Yours?
