I have just been diagnosed with having diabetes melitis .Wow what a shock this has been. I now have a lot to learn about diet , medication and a whole new life style, and it really is overwhelming . I think that it is going to take a while to get use to. I have to find low GI diets and go to the diabetic educator and monitor blood sugars and learn a complete new life style. For those of you out there who have diabetes, how did you cope and did it take you a while to get use too.? Did you get depressed with it all. Are you on medication or insulin.? I would like to hear your stories and advice. Cheers Sue

hi suehan1. I was diagnose 2 years++ am now on daily medication regime of 4 different medicine. At first I was surprised since I don't take a lot of sweet things and I mostly drink plain water. it was a shock to know that all this happen due to my diet and food group consumption. The first year I followed all that was ask of me. Eat moderately, control my food intake exercise, check my glucose level twice daily, write a diary of my intake and blood glucose level........I even lost some weight. On the second year after seeing that I can control my glucose level it started to go array. I kind of got a relapse of my previous style of living. I started to forget to take my medicine. start eating as before and things started to get bad. Than wife's friend got admitted to the hospital due to foot injury. she accidentally stepped on a rusty nail. The doctor clean her wound and ask her to rest. The day after they diagnose her with diabetes. She had never knew of it before. a few days later they cut a piece of her foot since it was getting rotten. than they cut some pieces more...this happen for 4 times. now she have only her foot thumb left on her foot and almost half of her foot is gone That news when I visited her at the hospital gave me my second shock. This time it really make me think of the affect of diabetes. Now I have started doing what I done after first receiving the good news of having diabetes. I hope I can continue with this lifestyle and proceed with my live till I die of old really old age.... hope you well and take care.

Having to live with diabetes can be hard, mainly if you have the more severe type 2 diabetes usually beginning onset in childhood or young adulthood. Though, just because you may have diabetes it doesn't mean that you cannot live and have a full and vigorous life. Live active. Regular exercise is nearly as vital as diet in managing diabetes. Exercise can help support better blood flow to organs and cells and also help you to attain and sustain a healthy weight.

I think it's wonderful that you have an uplifting attitude after coming on mylot and explaining your situation to us. We as a community have nothing but support for your ailments and hope you come out on top soon. I guess in terms of your actual situation, it's best to just eat as well as you can and not indulge yourself in too many of the negative things like sweets and such. Someone mentioned exercise and that is absolutely essential to keeping control of your condition and also keeping your stress levels down. Always remember that a positive attitude will result in a positive way of life and that will always result in a longer life.

Hi suehan, I am sorry that you got this deblitating disease diabetes Mallitus. There is no organ in body, be it lungs, kidney , eyes, heart which is not effected by increased glucose levels in the body. But good thing is we now understand this disease lot better than before and have lots of better medicines too, so this disease though dangerous is not as dangerous as it was before. Best thing you can do is follow medical advise and walk atleast 4 miles in morning..repeat in morning.

There are actually 2 types of diabetes. Type 1 is hereditary. If you have this type, you may have this for the rest of your life. It is good to consult your doctor about diet specifications and lifestyle changes. Type 2 diabetes usually occurs from obesity. Some exercise and a good diet is also quite important.

Hello Sue, I know diabetes is sad but its not something you should worry about, a good healthy diet will help you things run smooth. My parents both are diabetic and I can expect the same result for me at any point of me as it is hereditary. When my parents were diagnosed diabetes all the doc advise is you eat whatever you want but just that you have to be in limits. Say if you were eating 5 pc of chicken then reduce it to 2 that means you are free to lead the life that you are lading now but have your food habit control and exercise regularly and that should help... Luckily my parents aren't taking insulin, they are just on medication and they are doing healthy no complaints... nothing to worry keep smiling have a fun filled life.. Good luck:-)

Guess we were both lucky with the gene pool. I know that I have to reduce the portions and have a good low GI diet. I will going to the diabetic clinic soon and getting all the information as well, I know I will be fine and when I get over the shock of it all I will be able to live a very normal life.Cheers Sue
