I got married in 2009 and for the first time in my life, when I filed for taxes in 2011, I owe money. How did this happen? My federal witholdings are much lower then when I was single. But i never changed anything. Now I owe money and I have to deduct extra money from every paycheck so my federal witholdings aren't too low. Can someone explain how my federal witholdings automatically dips when I state I am married? On my W-4 form, I still declared 1.

I'm not tax expert but you do know that tax rates are different when you are married than when you are single. Assuming your spouse has a job you obviously made more money when everything is combined. You can try to file as married filing separately and see if that makes a difference.
