Why do we always seem to have bigger problems than everybody else?

Is it just me? Or does it seem like my problems are always bigger than the world? I would be watching one of those primetime dramas on TV and even though they are dealing with life and death situations, I still think that that their problems are far easier than what I am going through. That I would swap their troubles with mine in an instant. Just a feeling though… Maybe it is the thought that their problems would get resolve before the hour was up. Or maybe I just magnify my own troubles too much. Do you feel that way too? Are your troubles bigger than everybody else is? Does it seem that your sacrifices are far greater than the next person?

No, it's the other way around. Whenever I think of my problems, I find other people who have worse problems.

Sometimes I wish I could be like that... A glass half-full kind of person. I think it would be much easier. Thanks.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes things seem really overwhelming and intimidating, but I find that if I tackle things one at a time, it isn't so bad. And there really are so many more people who are much worse off.

Hello bounce. Well this happens because our problems DIRECTLY affect us when we encounter them. Our biggest concerns should be for example for saving the Rainforest. Now that sounds important doesn't it ? But we are not directly affected by it and thus we don't worry enough for it - but we should. Nature should be one of our main concerns and i do hope we realise this before it is too late.

In the grand scheme of things, we should be more worried about pressing problems like the environment, like you say. But in reality, all those 'bigger' problems go to the back of our minds because we tend to focus on what affects us directly. I think it is just human nature. Thanks elitess!

hahahahah. we feel exactly the same. I also feel like my problems are far more hard to resolve than others problems. I always manage to put myself in the lowest point of my life whenever I have a problem. I always make a big deal out of my simple problems. that was before. Now i just push my problems aside and I always think that I can fix it if I just relax and not make it so much of a pain. I want to enjoy my life and not worry about my problems so much. Because a friend told me once, "life is short, so might as well enjoy it and make the most out of it". I never forgot that line ever since. So whenever I have a problem. I remember what she said and I find a way to just sit back and relax and think or ways to solve my problem. not to panic and not to pitty myself so much. many people have problems. not just me. :)

It is amazing how a few words, and a realization of life can help change the perspective about problems we face. Although it might be true that some problems are the same, we just magnify it because it is about us. And just as easy, we could put it aside if we are just in the right frame of mind. Thanks.

Hi Yes you are right, we are all so much selfish and self-centered that all we can think of and whine about, are only our own problems. Our own problems, even if petty assume demonic proportions. We can never understand the gravity of the problems others are facing. And I am not an exception.

Hello amirev777. I think this is just part of human nature. To be 'self-centered' when it comes to problems. To think that we always have 'more' than others. Thanks.

Our own problems are always more important to us. Obviously we each realize that there are others out there in worse situations than us, but when we're faced with a major problem it's hard to remember that. Often it's not the problem or the solution that is troubling us, it's the general worrying and stress, and knowing that we may be feeling this way for quite a long time. We cannot feel someone else's emotions, so that is why your own troubles are harder on you, as you're feeling every emotion that comes along with the problem. You don't worry, stress, or get scared about anyone else's problems, you know.

You're absolutely right that it is the stress that wears you down. And it is the one that magnifies our own problems, and makes us not see the magnitude of other people's problems. Just part of being human, I guess. Thanks.

Long ago there was a TV program called Ally McBeal, about a law firm and the same question was brought up. Her answer was so sweet and simple: "Because they are mine!!!" that the problems are hers, and that's why they are the biggest deal. Simple truth but beautifully said.

Admittedly, I've seen the 'Ally McBeal' series. Although I could remember exact episodes, I do remember her having fits about her problems. And magnifying it just because she was the star. In some way, I do feel the same about my own problems. Thanks.

I think everyone feels their own troubles are bigger than everyone elses, probably even bigger than they really are...that is because we are the ones going through these problems at that time and I guess we concentrate on them too much and they get magnified...as far as the soapies problems, well they have so many problems and they get solved so quickly and forgotten by the next week... reality is so different.

Thanks lilaclady. That is the exact sentiment I go through with my own problems. And concentrating on them so much does magnify each problem greatly. Reality may not be a good comparison as it is finite.

if you will compare you problems with the tv sitcom then you will really feel that your problem is bigger than theirs. all of us have problems and some have surpassed the bigger waves and now resting ashore... but soon another problem will come their way again. i too have problems i though i can not bare. specially when our city was hit buy a big flash flood and my mother is half paralyzed and i dont know what happened with them for all the phone signals was cut and things like that. our house was flooded at the first floor and all of our things was wet and damaged. it was hard to start all over again... but after a month i saw s clear path... a path to recovery. i guess it is how we face our problems, and how people around us can help morally and cheer us up. good day

I agree that it is all relative. On how we face our problems. That if after some work we can create a 'clear path' to resolve our issues then the weight wouldn't matter. Thanks for the response.

Yes Bounce58, I´ve noticed these perception too. We are all self centered. Since we are kids we are tought to be the center of ourselves, and then the world moves around US. But, when we open to other people, we notice that we are not the center. Don´t you think so? Blessings!... Dainy

Sometimes it is hard to realize the people around us. Even if they have bigger problems than us, if we have our own troubles front and center. We can only see these if we've moved on from our own problems. Thanks dainy.

Probably because we only think I. we only about ourselves. We at times think we are the only ones with this problem and that the world is mad at us. lol but we realize later on that there are people with worse problems than us.

I think it is just part of human nature to think about ourselves first. To think about our problems foremost, and not see that there are other people in worst situations than us. We only come to that realization after we've gone over our problems. Thanks.

Because we tend to focus on what we don't have rather than what we have. If we learn to be contented then we would think that we are more blessed than other people. It is a matter of perspective. Are you seeing a half empty cup of water or a half-full cup of water?

I've always been a pessimist. And my cup is always half empty. You are right that it is a matter of perspective. And part of human nature to focus on ourselves first. I don't think it is a matter of contentment though, as I wouldn't necessarily put 'contentment' and 'problems' in one sentence together. Thanks.

Oh I'm a pessimistic person too. I always think about the worse in a situation. So it makes me think of ways to prepare for it. So if it happens, I already have a solution for it. It usually works for me.

I think it's just a misnomer and more likely as a perception because when crisis struck us, we tend to be so focus with it that we feel that the burden is so much heavier. But the truth is, other people have major problems that we are.

Hello dynzdolina. That seem to be the problem. That we get so focused on our own troubles that we fail to recognize other people who are in worse situations than us. Thanks for the response.

I used to feel the same my friend.. but when I actually realized how painful others trouble can be, I thanked god for giving me such small trouble and I can also find a solution to it.. its just that we fail to compare ourselves with people who are worst than us.. today i feel that i am not paid great compared to others in ma office but if I have to think the other way round, I see people with no job, no money and can't even fulfill their daily needs... I was surprised when my own relative came to me and asked hey have you ever had a black forest cake !! that was quite surprising so whenever I feel low or feel that I have some huge problem I try to compare my current situation with others who are having problems worst than mine.. But one thing my friend and this is true.. no problem is permanent you will definitely find a solution if you think in a right way and action it right.. Good luck

Thank you vasugi. You are right that it is a matter of perspective. That sometimes when we are so focused on our own problems, we fail to look at the bigger picture. Or other people who have it worse than us. Usually, we can only do when we've actioned our problems and have a clearer picture.

Well, everyone has his problem and what really matters is how we look at it. Just mind your p's and q's and deal with it calmly and reasonably.

Hello Soochow. Thanks for the tip about minding my p's and q's. That would certainly be helpful, and a better alternative rather than lashing out to people around when the problems get too big.

I believe that when I am facing issues because they affect me personally that at the moment I am feeling that mine are far more then the other persons. However, when we relax a bit and or are a bit at comfort then we can clearly see that our own issues are not quite as big as theirs.

I guess that's what my problem is. On how to relax a bit, or feel a little bit comfortable with my issues so as not to magnify the problems I face. Although I don't know how to really do that, as the problems would always most likely be front and center. Thanks.
