I had a nightmare that Mom got me the Nook!

Okay, for starters... I hate eReaders. I hate the idea of them, I hate the look of them, and I hate the push to switch to them. I make no secret of this! My family knows! They've been the ones listening to me rant about it! Just last Christmas we were talking about the Kindle and I told them, "Don't EVER get me an eReader, not for Christmas this year... not for Christmas EVER! Best case scenario I'd never use it. Worst case scenario I'd do something drastically destructive to it, video-tape it, and put it up on YouTube coupled with a rant about how much I hate eReaders." They got a good laugh out of that one... but despite my ranting and ravings... my Mom likes the idea of eReaders. And recently a package came in the mail from Barnes and Noble. I saw the box on the counter and asked Mom what book she had ordered. She confessed that she'd gotten something for me (and kind of for her too) for my birthday. I was like, "Okaaay..." Well my birthday's still almost two months away, but she's known to jump the gun and I'm not going to protest if she got me a book. I looked on the side of the Barnes and Noble box... and it said, "Nook Color." ... I tell myself not to panic. It's probably an ad they've decided to put on all the boxes they send out. Barnes and Noble has become a real monster about advertising for their devil machine- I mean eReader. My Mom knows exactly how I feel about eReaders. The box probably contained a fantasy novel that Mom knows that I want to read. Then last night I had a dream that I opened said package on my birthday and it was indeed... The Nook. *facepalm* Now my brain is making me paranoid over nothing.

Oh no, you don't really think she'd give you something you clearly don't want, would she? I am with you, I much rather have a real book because I rather read from a real book than an electronic device, I do enough of that already, I need the break..

I'd like to think so! I was pretty sure she knew me better than that. She herself has talked about getting her own eReader (to which I have begrudgingly responded that I might still love her if she did. lol), and I get the feeling she thinks my aversion to them is rather silly. (Which it might be... but I'm not giving it up! lol) I wholeheartedly agree. When I pick up a book I want to be putting the technology down, not right back up again!

Maybe there is something else she thinks you'll like that she also likes, is that a possibility? It'd be terrible if it was a Nook, since she knows you rather not have one.

I know there are loads of books that we both enjoy so it's probably one of those. I just told her about my dream (without mentioning that I actually suspected that she had gone and done it! lol) and she laughed it off. This actually isn't the first time I've had a "someone in my family gets themselves/gets me an eReader" nightmare and then told her about it. It's usually the Kindle, though. Once it was an iPad but it was bought with the intention of reading eBooks. Oh yeah... my hysterical fear and hatred of eBooks might have gone a little too far. Then she asked me if I would mind if she bought herself one. I told her again, "If you did... I might still love you." So I still don't know whether what was in the box was actually an eReader or not, but at least I've made sure the eReader won't be given to me!

I love my books and I continue to get them whether it's by swap or by purchase. You'll not catch me with one of those nasty eReaders either. I'm totally with you on that. Only a true book lover will understand how we love our books.

I don't ever plan on using an e-reader. I love holding a real book in my hands. I can see how much easier an e-reader would be. It certainly would prevent the accumulation of books on my bookshelves, but I love those books (and sometimes I don't know why ). As a writer it worries me that print books will eventually be a thing of the past. Then I will never get to hold that book in my hands with my name on it. I believe there is less money to be made that way too... especially for publishers. This could put all the big publishing companies out of business, at the every least they would scale down their staff and put a lot of people out of work. One person's gain is another person's loss.

I don't plan on ever using an eReader myself. It's not just that I love holding real books and turning real pages... I hate the idea that they represent which is combining the written word with technology. I like technology in some ways, but I don't want it to take over my life and the lives of everyone around. I don't want it to lay claim to my books! I hate the idea of squishing libraries down into tiny little hard-drives. I don't just love reading... I love books! I love their bound paperback and hardcover goodness. I love carrying books with me. I love how pages have history, personality.... every book is different and I love it! What do ebooks have? Bytes. Digital ones and zeroes. Viruses. Uh... no I'll keep my library. I'd rather be buried in books and have no shelf-space to keep them in then have one dinky little eReader with all the books in the world on it. I also think there's less money to be made in Ebooks... but I worry about Bookstores more than publishers because bookstores would go down first. If there were no print books, then what would bookstores sell? They could try and sell digital ebooks, but the trade in that is mostly online so there would be no need for the building. There goes all those jobs. Now that there are no bookstores and libraries have gone all digital... where are authors going to go on their book tours? What are authors going to SIGN on their book tours? I don't like the idea at all. It's two steps short of the apocalypse to me! I couldn't imagine never browsing in a bookstore ever again. Digital book-shopping is utterly no fun whatsoever.
