Do something different...

Here we are. Saturday night and the Boss and I are home alone. She's dozing in front of Steel Magnolias and I'm playing on the computer. Earlier the Boss said that we ought to do something "different" - but she was in her jammies and warm and cozy and I had just got in from work - I think that she meant go to the movies or theatre. But it struck me just what is there that is really different and exciting in most small towns to do at short notice on a saturday? What would you choose to do on a saturday evening (assuming that you are not working) in your town?

There is so much to do in my town and with my small daughter I normally cannot do much. But I do look forward to once in a while, catching a movie and or going to a nice dinner. I think this would be nice for you and your wife too.

I have to stick to a rigid diet so eating out is quite hard for me now. But once upon a time we did that often.

grrrr lost my response. okay paste and copy grre As I have spent 20 days in a rehab hospital getting over a twisted knee and broken nose from a fall in which the floor won the battle. I had two huge black eyes, broken nose and pains everywhere. lumpy pads under my back, aides who were blind to call lights, and needing to go potty while under an aide's scrutiny it is pure heaven to be back here this Saturday and be on the net and mylot like crazy. I just had a pain pill so my knee no longer hurts at all.Not at all exciting but a lot more fun than beingin any kind of a hospital thats for sure.My insurance just covered 20 days so they were quick to discharge me as they knew I could not afford 100 dollars a day. as I am already paying via Social security and ssi checks monthly it pays to come home here. I am ever so much better than I was the after noon I fell. that was agony and cou ld not walk on my right leg at all. so now I am home and happy.

I should think that you are happy to be at home Hatley. Poor you. Please be careful. We prefer you here on a saturday rather than gallivanting in the ER!!!

@Hatley, My father-in-law fell flat on his face on the floor a few weeks ago. I haven't seen him yet (him being in UK and us in India - a bit expensive), a friend who just came back from the UK said he look like a big panda with big round eyes or that he looks like he is wearing this huge sunglasses - perfect round at that!! It was not funny to get a phone call saying he has fallen down on the floor and was taken to the hospital. Luckily, no harm done, just bruises and YES, the big dark circle on his face. I am sorry for your suffering. We missed you and when hardworkinggurl made a discussion that you would be back soon, we were very happy to hear that you were getting better. We all wish you the best and hope you recovered fully soon. Good to have you back.

I like going out to eat but my rigid diet makes it quite difficult at present.

Well, I can think of loads of different things which you could have done or do in future, but in order to keep this above the waistline and not too adult, I will suggest playing Monopoly! But if that is a little boring, you could always go out and throw rocks at peoples rooftops before running away giggling like teenagers! That would help get you fit as well.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Hmmm.... Monopoly might be a quieter pursuit. Did I tell you that I live in a glass house? You know what they say about throwing stones in those!

Yes I do! You could also buy some telescopes and do some star gazing. Oops, forgot that you live in the UK...the land of the long grey cloud!

Assuming I am not working, I would opt on a Saturday night to go to our local pub. There all the actors, hang out and we let our hair down and let loose! We play pool, and some cocktails of course, that is if I am not too tired and pooped!

Are you a thespian? Our local theatre is always a social centre for the local acting community. I don't think that they have homes to go to! LOL.

There is absolutely nothing to do in my town. Boo. You have to travel 20-25 miles just to get to a theater. Also I am not in the country either but there is just nothing to do. Take care.

Doing something different can be dinner with music and candlelight and maybe a shared candlelit bath after and someone or both take turns at massage. It doesn't have to lead to anything or be a special meal (it becomes special because of the atmosphere you create - it could be baked beans on toast). I find candlelight makes things seem more peaceful...the space around me feels more harmonic.

uuummm. if she was already in her jammies, do you think she might have meant in the bedroom? gee, think about it dude. now dont that seem to be a spice up of something different on saturday night? maybe she meant in that way.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

LOL. I don't think that's what she meant. But maybe I misjudged her. She's not usually that subtle!!

Hi P1key, Well a few years back I used to go pub crawling in town with my friends and that was every Saturday and one day I was stopped by a bouncer and accused me of being a trouble maker, ofcouse he was only joking with me as he was around six foot tall and you know how small I am, lol! but nowadays I rather be at home warm and cosy in my jammies watching tv and being on my laptop responding to your discussion, lol! have a great weekend, hugs. We are fortunate to live in a pretty relaxed neighborhool, so we'd probably invite the neighbors over for a pajama party. Maybe play a game or get pizza and watch a movie. Maybe the Boss wanted the computer? You could have slept through Steel Magnolias....
@p1kef1sh (45681)

There's no way that I could sleep through that film. What with all the sobbing from my womenfolk. The Boss would watch that film before going on the puter.

To be honest, on most weekends I just like staying at home and getting ridiculous amounts of sleep. My fiance and I love staying at home. We can get through the whole weekend without stepping foot outside. But on some days, I like going to the movies with him. We make plans to go out on date nights. Sometimes it's a game of mini golf or just spending the night outdoors stargazing swapping ghost stories.

yeah, remember that the easiest way to anyone is through the stomach... and you may have some parlor games or sing-along. i love gardening too... but instead of flowers and ordinary plants, i plant herbs like thyme, cilantro, basil, chili, etc. nice to see and handy everytime i want to cook some pesto or chicken grills.

In my 50's now I'm content to stay at home on a weekend evening but when I was younger I'd like to go to concerts. That really capped off the week nicely, the louder and rowdier the better. I wonder why it is that so many of us like to be at home better than being out and about at night? I remember partying all night, sleeping an hour or so then going back at it again and thinking it would never end. Now I enjoy a quiet night at home with the dogs and the television. Kind of sad, really. Maybe next time the Boss proposed something different you should pull out the backgammon board or some other game with a bottle of fine spirits and challenge her. Or perhaps throw on your coats and take a romantic walk into the night.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
5 Mar 11
I can't play backgammon but there are other things. We do sometimes go to the coast (40 minutes drive) and walk along the cliffs. That's quite romantic.

Yes pIkefIsh, Saturday and Sunday give us some relief. We should make the holydays something different. If you have a river in your small town then go there. Ride on a tiny boat. You or your Boss can sing.If the night is dark and the sky is full of stars that will be amazing. The river is calm and gentle wind is blowing. There is none, but only you two.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
5 Mar 11
That would be amazing and it's a great idea. Unfortunately it is still winter here and there's no boating at the moment. But I shall remember it for the summer.

Well, to do something different on a Saturday evening is funny. I didn't do anything different last evening but just stayed at home watching the TV and some videos. If I am going to try to do something different, I would go out with some fellows to play outside, roller skating or singing songs in the KTV. On Sunday, I am supposed to go to the cinema for a new movie. I don't often go to the theatre, it's also something different, I guess.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Roller skating might be fun. Although at my age I'd probably break my leg!!

We have the bowling alley and the movie theater. That is it unless we want to drive a half hour. Then we have a few more options, including an arena football team/hockey depending on the season, ice skating rink, and a comedy club. I have a two year old, so there is no just doing something on the spur of the moment, because we have to hire a sitter in advance.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Bowling is different. We don't have that many alleys close by but there is one in town. Great idea. Thank you.

On this particular Saturday night I spent time with my husband and daughter watching TV and talking. My daughter is grown so this is new for us because she is so seldom home anymore. But I also enjoy having friends over for game night or movie night and just enjoying their company. I am not big on movies especially when the price is so exorbitant and that's for the popcorn!!! :-) Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

That must have been very pleasant having your daughter visit. As they age our relationship changes with our children. But they are still our children no matter how old they and we are!
