Same topic?!....Same title?!

Okay, it isn't new to find repeated discussions here at Mylot. But to find the same topic and the same title that you previously posted? I really don't know what to think. I was checking out discussions my friends started, and I saw this discussion from a newbie that was very identical to what I posted..identical to the point that even the title is the same. I don't know what to do..or should I just do nothing? Can I just be forgivable and let this thing past ? I think she hasn't figured out what the search bar is for?

Hi sweet_pea, I would suggest you tell the member who posted identical discussions that you have already started a discussion about the topic, and that his/her discussion will get deleted because it is duplicate. Give him/her a link to your discussion, and report that discussion to the admin with a link to your discussion stating the reason that it is duplicated discussion. It is our duty as a member to help out the admins and also to help other members. That particular member may not be aware of the search engine or that there has been a discussion already made.

Oh I am really torn! I am torn between my duty as a member of Mylot and being a friend to her. She is in my friends list. It really makes it difficult to report. She is just a month here and she probably was a lost newbie.

Hm...that is complicated. If the admin see it, he will delete it anyway whether or not you made a report. What penrocker suggested might be a good idea then. Just pm her and tell her her mistake. I think she will appreciate it.

Can I report Search Bar instead to admin? Goodness, when I search for the tag that we both used in our discussion, my topic didn't show up, hers did. So I wouldn't really blame her if she didn't see the topic in the search bar.

You should have reported that duplicate discussion not because it was yours duplication but because it was in fact a duplicate discussion. It is our duty to report admin about repeated discussion as they cannot keep their eye on each and every discussion and they cannot compare every discussion with last discussions. It is almost impossible for them. We must report anything which is against the guidelines. So I believe you should have reported it including the link of previous discussion.

It was a duplicate discussion indeed. But when I tried searching for the topic using the Search Bar, it didn't showed my discussion. So I really wouldn't blame her if she posted that discussion because the Search Bar didn't provide her the information that such a topic already exists.

Probably it was coincidental, she came up the same idea as you did, but she didn't realize that someone else within mylot also posted the same topic and same title. What do you want from her then? Some sort of copyright damage compensation? Or sue her over administrator? Let it go.

That's what I think too. Being a newbie, you can be a target of a lot of mistakes here. But it is through these mistakes that you can actually learn. I experienced this myself posting a similar discussion and the one who posted was kind enough to show my mistake. I've learned from that experience.

Since a few weeks many new members are "rewriters" : they are rewriting successful discussions to start new ones. Most of these discussions are deleted because they are duplicated. If the topic and the title are the same, I think I would hit on "abuse" for plagiarism. Rewriting a discussion is certainly not a way to enjoy myLot -- it is so easy to start new original discussions -- and plagiarism is not acceptable.

Thanks topffer! Well she rephrased the topic base on her experience, but the bottom line is we are still asking the same thing to our respondents.

Hello sweet_pea, Something like this happened to me when I was a newbie. I started a discussion, asking myLotters for some advice on what product to buy. I didn't receive too many responses but the next day an older myLotter started a similar topic. And guess what? She received a lot of responses! I found the answer to my question there, even though in my topic those users didn't bother to write a response. Later, that user became one of my best friends here and we joked about that situation. I am sure she didn't even saw my topic when she started her new one. It was a funny coincidence. Maybe the same thing happened to your friend. Maybe it was a coincidence. If she's your friend indeed, I think you should send her a message to tell her about this problem and to explain her about the use of the search bar.

Hi inu! I also experienced this before. I was just new and then a Mylotter joined in the discussion and referred me to his link. I was really apologetic but he was really nice. I figured out the search bar didn't showed the topic when I typed the tag that we used in the discussion. Maybe, she really didn't intentionally did it.

You need to report the duplicate dicussion immediately.if your discusson was copied word for word that is plagiarism and is a very serious offense.Forgetting this and letting it go is not the answer.whether this person is a friend or not letting them get away with this is wrong and enables them to just go on doing this to others, feeling if they got away with it the first time, why not try it again, which is very unfair to other members here, who might have the same thng happen to them, by the same person.

@jujunme - I think the discussion was not copied word for word, the second poster made the topic her own sharing her own experience on the topic. Maybe she needed other people's reaction on her experience? I do agree that she should have at least changed the title. But if the topics were so similar it should have been a response to the original rather than a a new discussion though right? Hmmmm. Now I'm confused!

That's ok, i understood what you meant yes, i also think she should have just responded to sweetpeas discussion instead of starting a whole new one on the same subject and of course changed the title. What made me think this was copied was how sweetpea explained it by saying it was "almost identical", including the title.i'm not sure, but i do think the second discussion will be deleted, since it can be considered a duplicate of the first one.

@shattered. Yeah, she didn't copy the content of my discussion. She based it on her own experience. Unfortunately, we just have the same title to that discussion. @jujunme. Sorry if I got you confused. Anyway here is what I discovered. When I tried using the search bar and typed the word that was tagged to both of our discussions. My topic didn't come out! Her topic did. I'm more confused than ever.

sweet pea what she did breaks both mylot rules and worse the rule of the U W plagarism which is illegal in the UD reporter her to myhlot as that is stealing. she is harming you and harming mylots reputation too.She copied your work and that is wrong. repoert her as mylot admins asks us to do.no do not wait for this to pass report it as she probably does not know you cannot copy others works here, its illegal in the U S she needs to know about this before she gets herself into trouble off my lot. report her at once, use the exclamation point.

Hi Hatley! It's not really plagiarism, in my opinion. It is more of a similar discussion thing . She didn't copy my discussion by the letter, it just happens we are referring to the same topic and have the same title too. I sent her a message and she already replied. It was unintentional she said, and she wasn't aware that she needs to use search bar to look for similar topics. Anyway, what is important is somebody have learned their lesson, I hope.

Hey sweet_pea, Lovely title by the way it got my eye haha which is a rerally good thing my friend haha.. To answer your question I think if the title is similar and subject the same and everything is same thing. I would hit the report button I think it's diffenert if time as pass and the same. Discussion has taken place. If everything is similar then action should be taken that's like copy and pasting if they can't then that's just against the law lol.. I'm sure you won't take it that far but I think something should be said or done. If everything is similar like you said bascailly a copy and paste of the same discussion. Then report [!] if you don't what would you do if the same person does it again? Send a private message or something. If you don't want to get anyone in trouble there account ca be deleted If it's a copy and paste with no reason in the end.

Oh okay, well I'm not sure what you should do it's all base on you if you want to report or not if you don't want to and let it slide then okay, that's all up to you my friend. Me I think i would let it slide for now since it wasnt a copy and paste situation but, if they responded to your discussion and stuff then wrote a discussions basically of the same subject then I think report will do that wasn't nice. To me all depends on you report or not, I don't think it's nice if someone is repeat my discussion just so ey can gain from it which is not nice. The search bar i ant use it right now lol. So i can't check on it for you a double check says I was abusing it but okay. ? hope you get this problem fix. Of yours and you decided on a final descision

There are different types of users here on myLot. All start out as newbies, and all may have different reasons why they come in here the first place. It isn't unheard of that someone may just come in to earn money. And maybe copying discussions would be an easy way to around the system if they don't get caught. Just take note of the username. And if it happens again, I'd report it to the admin.

It happens. Sometimes the search bar does not provide you the results you want. I've searched for some of my own discussion and others that I have responded to to try it out but found different discussions. And what I was looking for did not come up. I think you were right in just informing her. It would not be good to alienate newbies as new members would make mylot a better experience. The clincher here I think is the fact that she made the topic her own, maybe she really just wanted to share her experience on the topic, but forgot that you already made a discussion out of it. In any case, its good to know you are friends now.

You are so right Shattered! When I searched for the word that was both used in our discussion as a tag, the results of the Search bar did not showed my discussion. If I was a newbie, I would have posted it because I haven't seen a similar post because the Search Bar didn't show it in the first place. So should I rather report the Search Bar instead to admin?

Does the Search Bar get suspended for it? Oh dear when that happens, there are more multiple discussions that would just pop out of nowhere.

I had experience this few times before. I just posted a discussion. After 1 week, someone posted the same discussion again. Although the title is not the same but the meaning are same. I would said don't take it too serious. Nothing is perfect here since there are a lot of members here. I think they are not purposely do this. Sometimes i will think will my topic posted by someone before but i will still post because this is what i want to ask and know. I am not copying anyone idea.

Thanks cmang! I think she did not really intentionally do it, since the search bar didn't produce my topic when I myself searched for it. Yeah we sometimes experience what other people experienced. So we come up with discussions base on this not knowing that other people might have posted them already.

Maybe someone forgot he posted the discussion and intend to post it for "the first time". Or maybe he's just a copy-paster and is trying to get some easy bucks on MyLot, there the admins will delete the topics and possibly ban them. But it's not that uncommon to see duplicate posts or with very same idea, as the site has a long history and we often post the same topic someone else posted some time ago, but worded differently.

heheh then I guess it was only casual. You know, some people are really uncreative (like me) and choose simplistic titles, and is not too hard for another person to come up with the very same title. Just look at the "similar discussions" to the right of this and on some topics you'll see many quite similar posts, if not the very same things worded a little different.

Nah, she didn't do the copy and paste thing. We just have a similar topic but what really surprised me is that we have the same title. People come and go here at Mylot. And we often bumped into similar discussions from time to time.

Most of the newbies are not aware of the purpose of the search engine. They thought that as long as they can post anything, they can get paid for that. We got moderators here to check and delete such discussions. If it wasn't deleted at all perhaps it wasn't considered as a violation of the rules here. This doesn't really bothers me when somebody posted a similar topic to mine, I just don't respond to that at all! Anyway, I just reported my own self for abuse because I posted the same discussion twice due to server error. I hope the admin or moderators would consider that I wasn't cheating at all. I don't want to get banned here in my lot at all!

I would have really shrugged it away, it is just that I really find it amusing that we even shared the same title. Same topic? Ok. But same title? Can she be more original please, not that I am aiming for any copyright claim here. I already informed her but I haven't received any feedback yet. Let's just see.

ignore her and don't bother yourself. yes, am a family man with big numbers (breadwinner but never married). kids are my joys and i won't get tired listening to them. they make me feel younger and updated. there's no language barrier nor generation gap. i swear to you, i can relate to them. sometimes, i drive them crazy before i go nuts with them. am their favorite uncles, even a favorite brod to my siblings. my mom likes me very much for being a loving, sweet and thoughtful son. yup, feel free to let me know if you have some concerns on family matters.
