I was wondering if anyone has some info they can share on female dogs in heat. My puppy is about 7 months old she is going through her first heat now and I know every dog varies but I got a couple of questions. Should I use doggy diapers or leave her to "breathe"? How often should I change them?, Is there such a thing as "too much blood" /day? We are getting her fixed but until than EWWWW.. Help!

If it is too much of mess for you to handle. Then i would use the diapers. Take care.

Hello PreciousTT, Your dog will bleed for a few more days but usually female dogs clean themselves and don't leave any spots behind. Only when they sleep they might not be so efficient in cleaning themselves, so you may need to change the bedding more often these days. The bleeding should stop after an average of 10 days from the day it started. The days that follow the bleeding days are the most difficult days, as your dog will start to search for male dogs to bred. She will be willing to accept any male dog she meet, so you must be very careful if you don't want her to have puppies. This difficult period can last from 4 to 7 days (at an average) but you must keep an eye on her until she doesn't accept male dogs any more. If you decided to spay her, ask your veterinarian when it is the right moment for the surgery, but I don't think anybody will spay a female in heat. So you have to wait until all this is over (probably for two and a half weeks or more). Until then, prepare yourself to have a lot of male dogs around your house, trying to meet your girl. Take care!

Thank you so much for your response... We are planning to get her fixed in about 3 -4 months from now- I am sure she should be good by than. I have always had male dogs and she is my first female so it is a little new to me. We live in an apartment building and there is plenty of dogs around here. We have noticed the extra attention she has been getting from the male dogs... haha... NO puppies having puppies here..

Oh, what you've seen is nothing, compared to what you'll see when she will become cooperative. During the second part of the heat cycle she will start to seek male dogs' attention, and there will be more difficult. You know there were cases when female dogs dug into their house's doors to escape and meet a male. Those are the days when you must be more careful with her if you don't want accidents to happen. I wish you will pass through this period with no bad incidents. Good luck!

If your dog stays inside your house, better use a diaper rather than having messed up. It will only takes 2 days as i've observed with my female dogs. Just take it easy,it's natural

Thank you for your response.... "It will only take 2 days"... meaning she will only bleed for two days? because she has been bleeding for 4 days so far and I was told she could bleed up to 3 weeks(maybe more)
