I am a Bachelor graduate major in management accounting. Since, I was a kid, I've always love selling goods like, chocolates, clothes, jewelry and the like. And right now that I am done in school and with work experiences, I pursue of being a business woman. Because, I feel comfortable in doing it rather than staying as an employee all my life. But, the thing is my parents were so unhappy for me, because selling or doing business in the public market is degrading. All they wanted for me is to finish college and find a stable job in a stable company. But there is no stable job nor stable company. Even my friend who is currently working in an international company feels unstable with her job due to the many changes in their management. How about you guys out there? can you please advise me. Is it really degrading as a bachelor graduate, selling in the public market?

I wouldn't say it's degrading, why would it be? It's a legitimate job, you love what you do, and you actually earn from it. I know a lot of people who sell in public wet markets, and even my parents, who are both retired professionals, tried that for around a year and the only reason why they stopped was because it was really hard for them to keep up with the effort and the time, so they took the store from the market to our house. LOL! Anyway, if you love what you do and you are actually good at it, then go ahead and do it.. Your parents will soon see that there is nothing wrong in selling in a wet market.

No,of course not. Your job now is in fact related to your degree and there's nothing to be ashamed of! You enjoy what you do and you earn from it as well. It's decent and you're not stealing from anybody so I don't see why your parents would think it's degrading. My sister is an obygeine doctor but she quit practicing and continued our parents' business which is a grocery store. Do you think it's degrading for a doctor to sell grocery items? We don't see it like that and she's earning well from it without having to work at the hospital at the wee hours of the morning. She is less stressed and she loves what she's doing now. Continue what you love to do and sooner or later your parents will understand you.

Hi Jcbelle! Don't be discouraged! Prove to them that they are wrong! In our culture, many perceive a successful college graduate as someone who has a job at a prestigious company. They do not know that the only way to get rich is to be your own boss. Having your own business. I think you are on the right track. You know what you want and you love what you do. Some successful people have come from careers others see as a lowly one. Henry Sy used to sell shoes. Manny Villar used to sell fish in the market. I am sure you will learn from what you are doing right now. Just be patience. You have what it takes to be successful. Besides, there is nothing degrading in what you do. I just wish your parents could see that and support you instead. If I am your parent, I would really be proud of you!

I hate to admit it, but not being a business major, I had to look up what a wet market was. That being said, If you are earning money and can support yourself there is nothing wrong with what you are doing.

Why would it be degrading if you have your own stall where your could sell your wares? You are the boss of yourself. What is important is you are doing a decent job. You are luckier that way, rather than being employed in an unstable company. If you enjoy doing it and is gaining from it, then you shouldn't be troubled at all.

There is nothing degradable about making a honest living. If you love selling articles publicly, that your preference. It is said that a person excells in what they love to do.

No. But if you were a graduate and you're stealing... now that would be degrading, distasteful, disgusting and downright abhorrent there's nothing wrong with people selling in the wet market who knows... that fish stall or meat stall in the wet market could end up as a big business establishment because of your business acumen

Although I do not think so, maybe your parents have other ideas. If the wet market does not sound acceptable to them, why not in a shopping center? If you are sure of your product, it might also give it a more upmarket price and earn more. No doubt you may need to eke out a loan for the initial investment, but over the long run, the image of the company and the sales will grow faster if you are good. There is nothing degrading about legitimate work. Better to work than laze around all day and wait for others to feed you, right? I am sure you want to feed your parents as well. If you insist on the wet market, one good way is to go to the market and find out if there are other graduates there. Maybe you can form a support group for your cause. I would just add to say that I know of a VP in a company who goes down to the wet market to help out his parents during the weekends and public holidays...willingly and cheerfully. He is an example for many other colleagues. Maybe that might help?
