My mom used to have the same problems before but we advised not to eat so much of friend and oily foods but instead take in more cereals. I know it is hard for someone who gets used to usual Filipino foods which are really high in cholesterol, but somehow she has to think of her health. Please try to monitor your mother's diet and buy her high in fiber foods.

I think it is animal products like meat, eggs, cheese and such that have cholesterol. Vegetable products don't have any. So she will need to cut down on the products that have cholesterol to improve her health.

There are other ways to prepare food that will not use oil. Boiling, broiling, grilling and steaming are some of the ways to cook food without adding oil to them.
Another way to lower bad cholesterol is to increase the intake of dietary fiber like oats and legumes.
You can also change the type of oil that you use. Use olive oil or canola oil instead of hydrogenated oils. Olive oil and canola oil have monounsaturated fats that help lower LDL and raise HDL. But you still need to take care in eating even "good" fat. Everything should be done in moderation.

The doctors of my in-laws told them that we use canola oil or olive oil in cooking.
But because olive oil is very expensive and burns easily on the pan, we use canola oil instead. That way, even if we fry the food , we know that it won't be laden with cholesterol.
Also, to lower cholesterol, we eat lots of fruits, vegetables and fish. When we eat meat we don't eat the fat on the pork and the skin of the chicken. We seldom eat beef and when we do we only eat the lean parts.

It is well known that the higher cholesterol is liable to bring about atherosclerosis which can lead to stroke and heart attack. In normal times you as far as possible take vegetable oil and get plenty of exercise .In addition, you are sure to have a light and less supper.
