Are flash drives even becoming outdated?

With free services such as Dropbox.com, www.ge.tt, and others, is it really necessary to carry a flash drive around with you everywhere you go? I see how it can benefit in certain situations where you may not have an internet connection, but nearly every place has an internet connection now, so you could just log in and download your files.

That might be the case but I still think it's a good idea to have one around just for back up purposes. You never know when these sites will be down and such. Plus, I'm the skeptical kind so I don't feel comfortable with storing my files online, it can get corrupted or stolen or something like that.

I pretty much trust them. I don't have anything super important to be transferring online so I don't really care if someone got ahold of my files. I guess in certain situations I would be careful, but then again you could always encrypt the file before you upload it for safety.

Hi pyro, Not for me. I use the flash disk almost all the time. I would prefer to bring my data anywhere for internet connection is not yet the norm here. Only around 30 percent are online and the snail-paced data transfer of 40kbps makes for a very frustrating time especially when there's a lot of fast paced work to be done such as installing applications and operating system. I have even considered buying an external cd-rom drive and burning my data to dvd disk to simplify my work and protect my flash disk from virus infection. I always get spyware, malware and viruses galore when I go online.

I guess I'm blessed with fast internet. That reminds me of the old times when I had to fight over the internet connection because it was dial-up and it used the phone line, and nobody could call in or make calls because of it. Also... it was daaaanng slow. Hehe.

I understand your interest in storing data online, but it is a poor substitute for a personal flash drive. There is certain information, such as banking data etcetera, that I would store online irrespective of claims of security. It is also preferable to have data stored on a drive in case of failure of internet connection, which does still happen all too frequently.

Based on personal experience I do not have much faith on using the services of on-line storage sites. There are two main issues here, privacy and reliability. Using such a site means our files are more open to public scrutiny. If a hacker gets into the site he/she can create havoc to the files. How long can an on-line storage site maintains itself? The ones that I used in the past went under without any warning. Another factor is I do not always have on-line access. In conclusion I do not see flash drives becoming outdated.

I don't think so. There would be situations where you don't get an internet connection or connection becomes slow. Sometimes, the connection we get may be a pay per MB internet connection. So, it is always a good idea to carry flash drives rather than to look for an internet connection to download your stuff. Best wishes. Have a nice day =)

Yes I think so also that flash drives are still necessary. Even though we may have fast internet connection the assurance is still uncertain that the connection or the site is always available. Others have also said that slow internet can make you access your files longer unlike flash drives which are always handy. Online services like these are also good because we have more options of storing and creating backups for our files. As for me, I have these services acquired but never purely rely on them.

I still use my flash drive often, in fact I want to buy a portable hard drive soon for even more space to back up my files. In all honesty, I don't see the internet as lasting forever. Anything could happen, war, laws, etc. and the entire internet crash as a result. Not to mention on a lighter but still fatal scale, the websites themselves could crash erasing all your data for good. Sure these websites are convenient, but I always like to have an external backup just in case. I even have most of my documents printed on paper in case of a computer failure or such.
