When people give you a compliment, do you usually acknowledge it or maybe you would say that you really do not deserve it? What would you say in return when people compliment you?

We all appreciate compliments, especially when they are genuine. I always thank the person and if I can compliment them on something then I will also do that.

So true! Children need compliments and praise to build their confidence and sense of value. But it needs to be give in a balanced measure and at appropriate times.

I agree with both of you here. It is very important to give children compliments, because it acts as "positive reinforcement" and helps to boost their self-esteem. If they just hear you correcting them all the time and not praising them, then they most likely will have a negative outlook. If you balance the negative with the positive where it is appropriate, then they will most likely be well-balanced.

Yes, me too. I like to compliment my kids whenever they did something good. And I would always tell them that I am very proud of them. I think kids do appreciate compliments more than gifts.

I have a friend who can never take a compliment. Everytime I compliment she cries NO! NO! It's not true. I got tired of that then stopped her before she said no. Take the compliment and just say THANK YOU!!! People who think enough about you to compliment simply want to hear thank you whether you think you deserve it or not.

LOL! Your friend must be shy. But there's no reason to cry. I'd say it's a blessing to receive compliments. Yea, maybe there are people who just can't accept compliments.

I usually say "thank you" as that is polite. There are other times that I will expand on this, especially if I am not the one that deserves the compliment. For example, if someones says to me "That is a beautiful top." I might say something like "Thank you. My mom picked it out and bought it for me. She has really good taste, doesn't she?" That is not only acknowledging the compliment but also giving credit where it is due.

That's really a good response to a compliment. At least you gave some of the compliments to your mom which she really does deserve it. I like that.

If I don't deserve the compliment, I would thank them in a shy way. LOL But if I do, I'll thank them proud. =) How about you?

I guess a simple "thank you" would do. Or maybe "Nah! Just doing my duty/job". I guess it all depends on the situation. But I always feel proud of myself when I receive a compliment.

Tbh I'm really bad at accepting complements. When someone complements, I get so embarrassed and I just try to switch the topic. With strangers I do that but when my friends complement me, I just tell them to shut up lol. Seriously i'm bad at taking compliments.

I always say thank you and not shy away from it. I always believe that if a compliment comes in your way that I must own it because I worked hard and really wanted to hear that compliment. I realy love to graciously receive compliments. But if I feel I really don't deserve the compliment totally, I shy away from it and just smile and put on a nod. Sometimes I tend to pass it to others who well deserve it better than me.

Hi AG It's so good to see you here. Yes, we shouldn't shy away from it. In fact, we should always feel proud of ourselves whenever we receive a compliment. For me, I would always compliment my kids when they did something good. At least that should help them boost their confidence on doing the right thing.

Yes, I always think that giving compliments are better than giving gifts. Children likes it when you tell them that they are good or that they did great.

Right on the spot! Compliments are like rewards, they motivate people to do their best. Having that affirmation that they did well makes it more rewarding. In my opinion, being complimented can be a nice incentive to people. Good thing that you are doing it on your kids. It's a self esteem booster for them. Yep! Keep spreading the positive energy by spreading out those compliments!

I thank the person in return. But I wasn't that way when I was younger. I always counter a compliment, always thinking that I didn't deserved it. But I learned that such an attitude shows insecurity on a person's part. And sometimes telling a person that the compliment given was wrong or not applicable to you may even make that person feel bad. I guess I can say I'm now mature enough to accept compliments :)

You may be right. I think maybe we should just accept any compliments that comes. I like giving compliments as well, especially to kids whenever they deserve it.

It's funny how I used to think that I don't deserve the compliments that people give me. Even if it's not true, I just say thank you. Compliments are like little gifts that people give us. They think we deserve it and don't expect much in return. We have to take it and say simple thank you.

Hi redmaryjane You are right in saying that a compliment is like a little gift. I guess it is a nice feeling to receive little gifts of compliments and a simple thank you is all there is to it. Thank you for your response.

Thank them and compliment them back. I think if people say something good to you, it really makes you feel good. And you usually also give back good feelings to other people because you feel good about yourself.

If anyone give me a compliment first I smiled then say ohhhhh this is your experience and someone is compliment on you so you are transferring me ha ha ha then the person who is complimenting they immediately say sorry or say nooo this is mine I also say wow nice compliment even the compliment is not good. I always think positive and make a friendship with every person so generally no one can compliment on me.

Haha, you are really funny. Yes, sometimes there will be sarcastic compliments, I know. I guess you're right, just accept it even though it doesn't sound good. It's good thinking, friendship is important no matter what.

I say "Thank you!" It's the most polite thing to do, I think. Doesn't matter if I deserve it or not. (:

I think it is always approproate to say thank you and not complicate the situation too much. the giver gets to decide who deserves the compliment, not the recipient.
