After painting my living room...it looks twice as big!

I finished my living room last week. I took down the border that was dated...painted the walls a very pretty color called coffee with cream. After I got it all done for some reason the room looks so much bigger! Someone told me that it was the border that was making it seem small! Have you ever done something like painting that has caused a drastic change in a room? I am anxious now to get some new accessories!

It's amazing how something like paint can really change how a room looks, size wise and such. If you paint a room a dark color it can make it look smaller than if it is a lighter color. I never thought about a border making it look smaller but I guess I can see that. I have always thought crown molding looks beautiful but I now wonder if it would make the room appear smaller. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

I might actually try that probably a optical illusion due to the color blending in with the furniture in the room so the room looks much bigger. Maybe I'll go take a visit to Home Depot tomorrow

Personally I think anytime you find yourself painting a room, and changing the color, etc. you will often find it looking bigger, and much brighter as well. In your instance it could have been just removing the border, but being able to give it a New look could have been the ticket as well. I wish I had more time and money to redo some of the rooms in our house just to give it that new look as well.

I bet that is so pretty. Any chance we'll get to see a picture? I want so badly to paint the walls in my apartment, but I can't. I understand why the complex won't let its tenants paint the walls, I wish there was a way around it.

Yes...I love to paint. I have my walls white and won't ever change from that. If your walls are white then you can change up everything anytime with much less cost and work. Paint....paint can make all the difference in the world. I moved into this new apartment with the ugliest furniture and no money to spare. I took some black paint from walmart and some burgundy craft paint from Micheals ...total cost 6.00. I sponged on burgundy and black on my kitchen table and let it dry and then polyutherened it. It looked amazing. So I painted my coffe table black and just did the top the same way. I did my plant pot to match and painted the end tables in black. I got some burgundy curtains on clearance for under 10.00. I stuck with the colors, black, white, burgundy and splashes of emerald green all through my house.

Hi. jillhill. I have never painted my bedroom before. I love when someone paints though. I just love the smell of fresh paint. I am sure that your bedroom looks very big because of the new painting that is done to your bedroom. Enjoy your new living room that has been painted.

I bet it does look pretty & u are very smart to have done that all by yourself. I think anytime u get a new coat of paint on any room it/s a drastic change. Mine sure does need painting. I wouldn't want any new accessories , i love what i have.

Hi, Your house must be looking good now after re-painting. So far, I never do any painting for my own house and it is a tidious job and I don't think I can do it myself. Actually I love the house wall with clear colour, I don't like house wall with very dark colour as the house may have a dark effect too. The most simple colour is white, but nowadays, some interior designer may suggest to have combination colour for the house walls. And the combination colour may give a better effect to the house surrounding, I do agree. I saw some new houses with a very nice combination colour and the house really looks great and elegant.

Hiya Jill, I used to help paint and decorate a lot but since we have had to live Rented they don´t want the Walls to be painted any other colour than what it already is. I don´t much care for the colour but it´s not that bad really. Coffee with Cream that does sound nice and I can imagine all the new things you can put in there too.

Hiya Jill, Well you must be and thinking of all those things that you are going to buy or make to decorate it. There are still sales going on all over the place so if you don´t feel like making anything there are bound to be things that you can get that are worth the money. We still have furniture Sales going on too. Very nice furniture too I can tell you. Have fun redoing everything again.

Yes when we move in my father in laws after his passing. His kitchen was in dark paneling and the room is small. We painted it country white and the room looks so much bigger and its alot lighter in there.Doesn't closed in anymore. He had dark paneling ina the living room as well.It was wood paneling,so we painted it.It came out very nice.We put it a cream color,so much nicer.

Hi jullhill, I wonder whether the border you mean here is a stand screen. Here we have the foldable six leaf-screen which are very nice in design. There are mostly imported products from china. since the border is dated it's no harm to move it away. Yeah, the room is sure to look wider after a big stuff that is something like a divider is removed. I believe your living room not only looks big it looks fresh and attractive with the new paint color. I like to do some renovation as well to welcome Chinese New Year usually, so that the sitting would look rather different and decent. if it's affordable we would like to spend more for drastic change. Lol....but most of the time we have whitewash the walls inside and out. Hopefully you would accomplish your need and get your desirable accessories very soon. Wish you all the best and happy posting

we get excited having new stuffs even having new environment. painting makes every stuff looked different. yes you're right the border can have a space effect. it's better that you have chosen a neutral color. it's just a proper mix and match with your home accessories. While contrasting materials are often employed to solve problems or create dramatic effects, they can also be mixed and matched just to add a little visual interest to an area.Materials might contrast in texture but wear colors bearing a close resemblance to each other; or they might differ in color but carry a similar size, shape, and surface. The emphasis might be on blending materials into a pattern.

I always watch home decorating shows in lifestyle network. And i learned some tips and one is that, painting, colors create illusions, and maybe the color you used helped create that illusion that your room is big

It is amazing how certain colors or rearranging furniture can make such a huge difference. I have had rooms that looked so much bigger just by painting them a different color. There is that trick with light too. The paint can influence the size and the amount of light that seems to be in the room. I bet that room is really looking good now. Take care.

I know a border near the ceiling lets you know where the ceiling is, sometimes making the ceiling lower. Where was this border? How much of the wall did it take up? I'm just curious.

It was about 3 feet down from the ceiling..above was painted one way..below another. The border tied it all together with my furniture...but I really like it now!
