There are many ways one can increase his/her proficiency in a language. In any one language, there is the spoken level and the written level as well as the literacy level (words that are not to be taken as it is spoken). I would assume that you are seeking to improve your proficiency in English in all aspects. I'm a Singaporean Chinese and English is my first language. I won't say that this is language that is easy to master as compared to Chinese. Why? One would ask. The main reason is because there is no way one could memorise English but one could and would definately be able to memorise the Chinese characters in order to excel. As it is, I did pass my Chinese examinations, but if anybody would ask me to read or write in Chinese, I would say I can't. Reason being, I have only memorised the Chinese characters, sentences and meanings of the meanings in order to pass my examinations during my school time. For English, it is impossible to do as there are too many meanings to just one word alone (think phrasal verbs and you will get my meaning!). Anyway, on my part, I have been giving English tuition for 2 or 3 years to a couple of Chinese from China who have came to Singapore to study. They came here into Singapore with ZERO knowledge of English (not even the basic ABCs!) but yet, after just 1 to 2 years of studying in Singapore, their English improved by leaps and bounds and one of my present student has even scored 80 / 100 marks for his recent English examinations! This proved that English though difficult is still one language that could be learned. For English alone, there are many variations, both spoken and written out there. Are you talking about British English, American English or the sub-standard English that is being used in Asia? I understand from my students that in China, they learnt a mixture of both Americanised English as well as British English (depending on where their teachers come from). I will talk about the English that is being used in Singapore. We are using the UK (British) based English curriculum here, and our examination scripts are also sent to England for marking right after our major O level examinations. To improve on one's proficiency in written English is just to practice on lots of assessment books and practice papers. When one does a lot of these, they will soon realise that there is pattern in how the English language is used in written form. This then follows the rules of Grammar (which can be memorised first and then put to practice by using external books and practice papers). Next is the Vocabulary words whereby you can actively keep a book of vocabulary by recording around 20 new words everyday and look up their meanings in the dictionary. Try to form sentences with these new words based on your understanding and get somebody who speaks native English to correct through your words. This helps you to increase your knowledge of words. For spoken English, you will have to listen to more news documentary (as the newscaster tends to have better pronounciated words than most commoners - especially the British. The British have a clipped accent to the way they pronounce their words that the words sound 'polished'). Get a feel of how words and sentences are to be placed together and listen carefully to how these words and phrases are being pronounced. Thereafter, try to say back the same words to the mirror or to a recorder, play it back and determine if your pronounciation matches the actual one. If not, try again and again until you get it right. For composition and story writing, the only way you can improve on this is by reading widely and get a feel of how different authors have different writing style. Find your own writing style and apply the different techniques of story building to your own piece of writing. [Will Continue another time]

As you know, learning a language doesn't have a shortcut. I always think that Practice makes the perfect. Try to use more English and I am sure your English will be improved soon. Especially try to make friends with foreigners, and you shall have more chance to practise it. I love China

English is not an easy language to learn despite it being known worldwide. The problem is there are various type of English eventhough it was originated from UK. Australian and American have different way of saying things compares to UK. Since most of the time we listen to American based movies and song we more likely to use American English. to learn English we need a lot of reading and writing. It was the same with ay language. Then we learn by speaking. Since speaking comes simultasneously, it is difficult to check our grammar unlike writing. To help you, always try to write using microsoft word with Grammar assists. It does help you understand a bit and even help to check your grammar and spelling.

Reading english books for me is the most powerful tool to learn english. Or watching enlish movies. I am a Filipino, since pre-school English is our second language. I remember my teacher is always telling us to bring a Fil-Eng dictionary, maybe it would be helful for you if you find a Chi-Eng dictionary. But really reading english books, newspaper, watching english movie, news (cnn, fox news) would be a great help.

hi! I just moved to the US and my dad also has trouble learning English mostly when talking to other people. He's taking night classes and it really helps when you say something in Chinese then ask yourself what is it in English? Buy Chinese-English Dictionaries or use those online! Good luck!
