Forced Service

Charlie Rangel - Democrat from the House of Representatives, is digging up an old bill. He would like to see forced enlistment for youth aged 18 to 25. The last time this was brought to the house, it was voted down 402 - 2. Sounds pretty bi-partisan to me. [i]

Yes he really said that. This is taken from a letter to colleagues trying to drum up support for the Universal National Service Act.
What do you think of Rangel's proposal? Do you think their should be forced service?

Hiya laglen,
A forced Military Service? I thought that went out ages ago. It did here too. If they want to be volunteers to be a Soldier then that has to be their own personal choice.
Something done like that forced was never good for anyone.
Here it was 15 months too they got paid three hundred pesetas a Month and they had no more than that.
Of course loads of them managed to get out of doing it as their Careers were cut in half because of the break in their Studies before they had to do it like that.
Now it is voluntary as well.

Hiya laglen,
Yes I know that too. When I was in Barcelona we saw the American Ships that were in Port at the time and we met them as well some of them.
They were very educated and very polite.
I miss going there and seeing all that.
I even went out with an American Sailor for the Night great guy too.

In this day and age of no jobs and gang activity,I would support conscription.
It teaches respect, how to take orders,as well as giving a chance for a great education.
There is always a chance for war, both at home and away, and having a good well trained Army,Navy,Air Force and in the case of America and Great Briton,Marine Corp,is better than having to start a draft and sending in troops with only minimal training into combat.
Thank you for the discussion.

a lot of countries actually do that now.
um..i'm not sure what i think.on the one hand,it might teach them discipline, manners, and provide work in this economy..and leave open other jobs for older people..having said that tho,i'd hate to see young lives thrown away on wars.
right now this would be a bad time to enlist, forced or otherwise.we keep getting involved in things,i'm sure they will instate it at some point.

I already told my son that if he even thinks of enlisting while Obama is around I will pitch a fit like no fit has ever been pitched. Rangel's got a lot of nerve. What jerk keeps re-electing him?

The people in his district are just complete morons. He had 4 yes FOUR democrats challenging him in the primaries during his last election. I understand that the people there are too stupid to vote anything but the letter D, but there were clearly other people with that letter next to their names that were better than him.

I may be wrong, but I think the last time the draft was used was Vietnam. The draft has been used in times of war, when things are escalating. At the moment, that is not happening. I don't see it being supported. As for his reasoning, "All of America's children should share the risk of being placed in harm's way." That is not going to get the support he wants. However, I do not particularly support the draft being reinstated, I do think that young people that do not have their future planned out, as in going to college, etc. should consider the Armed Services, it is a good career move, it will pay for college, and they have benefits.

I think that a draft should only be imposed when actually needed. I have not heard that the volunteer military was coming up short on numbers. I am confused as to why Rangel would be calling for such a move.
On the other hand, Democrat support is low in the military. Maybe everyone should join and then we can be guaranteed that Obama is a one-term president.

I am not in favor of seeing forced enlistment into the military come back. What kind of service can be expected from someone when it is not done on a voluntary basis. If the miltary wants enlistments, they should make it be encouraging to the individual and not a threat.1 person likes this

lol I like going out with our American Sailors too. However, I am more partial to Marines...
