I've gotten some work from putting ads in our free papers handed out at shopping centers. I usually received one job from each ad. The last time I put in an ad, I didn't receive any work. I didn't put an ad in our regular newspaper because that's around $95 dollars per day versus $25 for three weeks. I've gotten work from word-of-mouth. A friend told a friend and then I found work that way. I called a couple of ads in our regular newspaper that I received work from. Most of the time, the jobs are already spoken for and they just have to put them in because the law says they have to in order to get public money (county/state/federal). But out of all the jobs I applied for, I did receive two positions that way. I have tried looking for work on the internet. Most search engines don't have any positions within 300 miles of here. A really good job search site might have something just outside of 100 miles. Some Craig's list stuff looks interesting, but I either can't get the email to work or someone already has the position. I've taken tests and out of 20 tests, I only received 2 positions for work over the last umpteen years of taking civil service tests. That's two positions I wouldn't have had if I hadn't kept trying. VESID, the Vocational Educational, etc heled me get a couple of positions. So how have you gotten work?

Funny you should ask..as you know I have been dog sitting for two neighbors for year now because I have no way to get into town. Well because of this, word of mouth got to another neighbor and I started dog sitting for her occasionally a few months ago and right before I opened my mail to read your post, she calls for me to dog sit this weekend.. So I guess I get work by word of mouth, as long as the people are walking distance..lol

Hey, if it works and you get work, that's all that matters. Read above, my word of mouth is only getting me so much work. Plus some of it I have to drive pretty far for. So yours is probably close to %100 profit. Thanks and take care.

Yes, 100% profit, but it is not more than once or twice a week and at $5.00 a trip, I don't make enough to do much with..Not that I am not grateful, I do appreciate the little I get, it is better than nothing..

If you made $8 an hour and subtracted gas, you'd probably end up with the same number or even less with wear and tear on the car to consider.

I just searched for work in my area and found a job as a waitress in a retirement home. I also got a job at walmart for the holiday season. It has been very easy and I've been lucky at finding work so fast and easy. I have been to 4 job interviews since then, 1 I was not qualified to do the job, the other 2 I got, and the other interview I had at the time was the only one that I truly did not get because they chose to hire someone else.

Friend of a friend works for me as long as you get work. The first time I checked Monster, they had work in NYC and Albany, but nothing anywhere the Canadian border of NY where I live. The last time I check, they were up as far as Queensbury which is near Glens Falls, still really, really far away. Never tried workopolis. Never heard of it before. Interesting idea. Maybe I'll go see if they even know about the Plattsburgh area or the North Country of NY. Even the heart of the Adirondacks would be closer. Thanks for the additional ideas.

I have used careerbuilders, monster and direct employer applying. I have in my life received lots of return calls and or interviews. But most jobs I have obtained was specifically on my own by sending out mass amounts of my resume to companies directly. The employment search world is kind of different today because there are approximately 1000 applicants for every one open position. Not as easy as before. I have not been able to be a regular employee in over a year. I have done several independent contracting jobs that I solicited personally for.
