Dietary Fibre

When I had all my recent medical issues I started to eat fruit rather than chocolate etc. Now I find that I have yet to find a fruit that I don't like - except apricots. I dislike the texture, yet peaches which are not entirely dissimilar cause me no problems at all. Fruits are rich in nutirents and dietary fibre - we all need plenty of that!! I have also noticed that more women than men seem to choose fruit first. I wonder if there is a genera gender bias or are women just more aware of their health. I have a horrible habit of reaching out for chocolate when I am stressed or depressed, but I much prefer the taste of fresh fruits and vegetables. I think that I reach to chocolate because it has a comforting quality to it that just makes me feel better at that particular time. Although I do prefer fresh fruit and vegetables to almost any other snack, and I know that they greatly benefit my health, most of the time, I am too busy to stop and take the time to clean and eat them. I think that women are more health consious then men, but I also think that a lot of times, women have a little more time to go through the process to prepare them. I also think that money plays a factor as to who eats what as well. We don't buy a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables because we are on such a tight budget we need to put that money else where. We opt for cheaper foods, even though they aren't as healthy. The trend I have noticed seems to be that it is not a gender issue as much as it has to do with time and money. Those who have the money to comfortable buy fresh, tend to do so, and those who feel that they have the time to prepare them also buy them more.

I am intrigued by the suggestion that money is a factor. A Mars bar here costs £0.45p or 73 cents US. A large fresh apple costs about 71 cents according to the US FDA - so marginally cheaper than a Mars bar. So it is cheapr to eat fruit. People often say that they can't afford to eat fresh; this is where your other point comes in - time. Depending how you eat your apple it may take time to prepare. Your Mars Bars comes ready wrapped and once removed - the work of a second, can be consumed quickly. An apple, should you wish to peel it is more complex and time consuming. But I'd still rather have the apple. LOL.

Thats news to me I would have thought more women would have gone for chocolate, I love both but in a shop I would choose chocolate over fruit if eating imediately but at home I would have fruit. I am not too keen on apricots either. Huggles. Ellie :D

They walked more too rather than taking a car to the supermarket they would shop from shop to shop for fresh produce, no wonder they were healthier.

I think that we have become a nation spoiled by the easy availability of "treats" Ellie. Chocolate being the number one. Our parents weren't so fortunate and perhaps that explains why they are fitter than us generally.

Maybe it's because the women need to set an example to the children. I know I eat more fruit than sweets when the girls were smaller. It also worked out cheaper to buy fruit for five people than to buy chocolate bars for five.

True. I am sure that it was cheaper. I find that chocolate bars are now far too sweet for me.

I'm not a fruit eater. I don't like fruits or vegetables, I have a horrid craving for sweets and other carbohydrates. I know, fruit is sweet, but that's not enough. However, I do force myself to eat fruit and the other things in a balanced diet. If I didn't, I'd be as big as a barn!

I love fruit and vegetables now. I've never actually disliked them, but they weren't always my No 1 choice. Now I can't imagine not having them.

It's very simple why more women (than men) choose fruit. Wives, mothers, girlfriends and daughters already provide enough sweetness for most men.

Ahh...so that's the reason! My husband (and his family) NEVER eat fruit! And I've been a fruit eater since I can remember. I was quite surprised about this when I was newly married. Now my husband frowns when I pick up fruit. Our older son and I love fruit of any kind....younger son HATES anything that comes under the FOOD category...which includes fruit. A statement I hear atleast 3 times a day (from the little one) is...'Vegetables and fruits are NOT good for me...they make me tired!!'...this one's taken after his dad when it comes to fruit :( On a serious note, I'm not sure if there is a gender bias or that women are more aware. Personally, it's easier to pick a fruit to eat than cook something healthy and nutritious.

I was your son! Not literally - although I am always open to adoption! LOL. I didn't enjoy fruit of veg until I was well into me teens. Then when I had to cook for myself I invariably "forgot" the veg. Once married things got better and now I am the one that bangs on about fruit and fibre! LOL.

I like apricots well enough but because of an allergic reaction, I no longer care for peaches. I can't say I'm fond of the fuzzy-ness of either. I have started eating more fruit in the last couple of years as part of keeping my cholesterol down and losing weight. I will pick certain fruits over others in part because of the "messiness" factor, but this morning I had a nectarine and a bottle of protein drink. The nectarine could've been riper, but it was less drippy this way!

I love chocolate and I also like fruit. I've eaten all of the chocolate I had in the house so I guess I can start on the apples. I bought several different kinds of apples recently in the hopes that I'd have the oomph to make some pies. They're still in the 'fridge. I like to slice them and drizzle some honey over them and eat them like that. I've not thought about whether men vs women prefer fruit to chocolate. I've not known many men who really went for either. Seems like the men go for the snack chips, pizzas, hot dogs, hamburgers, meat & potatoes.

I like your warning message at the end! It is true, women tend to be into healthier foods more than men. I think it is due to women being more conscious of their appearance and their need to always look good. If you are healthy, then you usually look pretty good. Most of our customers are women. When we host picnics or Raw Vegan pot lucks most of the people who turn up are women. Most of the people getting into the industry and setting up businesses or websites are also women. I have come across a few fruit that does nothing for me. I can eat them, but I do not find them delicious. Passion fruit would be one that I do not like the texture of.

The warning didn't work and now I don't post discussions at all Bill. Those days are gone and you have the dubious pleasure to have responded to almost the last one. The absolute final one was deleted too! I have noticed that in the Raw Food world websites tend to be fronted by men whilst women seem to be hanging on. I especially find Angela Stokes irritatingly fawning yet somehow compulsive viewing! I'm sure that she is a lovely woman but I do wish that she would record a more tuneful intro to her site's videos!

Oddly the only fruit I can eat is pineapple and Coconuts. I cannot stand the textured feeling of chewing and swallowing any other type of fruits. Which is weird because I love they way the smell. But something about the gooey parts of them give me Willy's.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

That is "different". I can take or leave coconut preferring to leave mostly but I do enjoy a pineapple. I find the skin a little chewy though! LOL. What do you do with these fruits? Eat them raw or cook with them?
20 Mar 11
its not that women are worried about being healthy, they think of chocolate as being fat and women are always looking for ways of losing weight. im sorry but why cant women accept that not all of us are made to be thin. why cant we just let our bodies do what they are meant to do.

Woman are more health conscious than men. We are also more aware and exposed to fruits and their benefits.

I see you're not too happy about having a few of your discussions deleted... As for this one, generally speaking, women are more health conscious, or at least are more willing to go to the doctor if something's amiss, so it doesn't surprise me that they would be more likely than men to eat fruit.

hi pikey I think its because women are more likely to be the chief cook and we modern ones do think about healthy foods too and also are aware our hubbies at time do not eat all their veggies or fruit so we sort of gently urge them to eat healthy. also we know fruits are so delicious we will not have as much trouble persuading them to eat those as we do the veggies.we ladies also do go to the doctor more often as we are proactive about our health.men tend to grin and bear it til they have to go.
