I still remember when I was young, I work in restaurant during the summer time as a waiter before. When I first begin, it was a tough job for me. I have to stand for eight hours almost without to sit down for more than a minute. My leg was so painful that I have to immerse my feet in the hot water to make myself feel comfortable when I got home each night. Some of the customers are just too picky and alwyas give you a hard time for this or that. Well, I think it was a good experience for me to get to know the world when I was young. It was tough but it also made me be toug to the world after that. It was a training for maturity and get to encounter with many different kinds of people in the society. that's my story and what's yours ?

When I worked in a hotel, the motto of the hotel was: Yes, I can. Since the Sales team (where I was) was very successful in selling the hotel and its function rooms, we got complain from the Food & Beverage Manager saying that we knew only how to sell, but we did not consider the employees in the FB department who worked hard for long hours on the events. So, to make it short the FB manager dared us in the Sales department to join forces with them on a huge wedding event. It was a sit down event for around 500 people. We had to carry the trays with food on it and serve it to the guest tables (a pair of us handled two tables for 10). Wow, the tray holding just one dish at a time for the two tables was so heavy, I could not lift it. I had to swap duty with a real waiter to carry the tray and I served the dishes. So, I know waiter and waitress deserves their tips when they did their job well.

Ah... I worked in a hotel as a bus person before. It was my first job in Canada and it was hard for me. When I look back right now, I thank my brother to provide an opprtunity to work in a small hotel through one of his friends.I made many mistakes in the beginning but I think that's the way to grow.It really help me to get use to the society and get to know the Candaian working culture as well. I still remember I once wanted to be helpful and jsut want to be an honest person by pick up the tips from the table to the waitress. But waitress got me wrong and thought that I was trying to steal her money away from the table. (How could I steal her money if I would carry the ten dollar bill up high in the air and I just wanted to make sure everybody could see it?She compliant to the host and the host told me to just leave the money on the table next time. Although it was just a misunderstnadinf but I have learned from it.

They are very possessive of their money, aren't they? Yes, learning through mistakes is the best way, cause you would never forget them and in a way you can also teach others with the experiences.

Sounds like you toughed it out bro. Good for you. I was a waiter once. At this filipino restaurant and lemme tell you... never again. My uncle worked at different filipino restaurants and always adviced me not to work with other filipinos. He was right. I pretty much worked over time and got paid peanuts. The owner took advantage because I was new. Oh, and also took my tip.

I understand what you mean because I once worked with a boss who was so harsh to his employees. He would charge the food you ate while many staffs of the restaurant could feel free to eat what they like. His temper was terrible and always blow people up with his hot temper. I never like this guy anyway but all these things had been passed and I am not sure if that boss is still in the same restaurant or not isnce it was a long time ago.Well, It is good to be a booss than being an employee in most case. At least you can give order to someone but not recieving order from your boss. Being a waiter also need to take order from the customers and some of them are jsut poor customers. Although in this business, the customer are always right in business world. But in fact, the customers are not always right and sometimes they are just disgusting and without reasons. Well, I am not a waiter anymore now but still remember that good ole days. I think it was agood training for the youth to get to know the world a bit with work experience like that.

I never had the experience to be a waiter when I was younger. That said, I worked in customer service when I was younger at one of the minor league baseball parks that is here in our town. From that experience, I will say that working in any kind of customer service is one of the most difficult jobs tha a person can have. There were always customers that were never happy enough about the job that we were doing there.

Agree with you Doran, customer services is just a difficult job.We alwyas hread that "customer is always right" in the business world, but in fact it is not true at all. There are some customers whom are worse than anybody in the world. They alwyas think that since they have money , they can ask for everything and compliant on anything when they don't like it. Well, if I was the boss, I will definitely kick them out(in my mind)of the store or restaurant. But from another angle, I would probably do the same when I am a customer (may not be like thsoe worse customers). I ould probably have some expectation towards services and products as well. Well, it is just not easy to serve others and sometimes its is not easy to be a boss as well.

I've been a waitress and i'm still one right now. IT's not an easy job when i first started on it, because it's so different from my usual work. I'm expected to be a fast learner as well as being efficient. I have to be an asset to my colleagues, my shift members and not a liabity. Things are always changing and there isn't a moment to relax, so it can be stressful for newbies. However when i'm almost 1 month old into the job, i've more or less gotten the hang of it and it's actually exciting. I get to interact with different people, talk to them and even got job offers from them, when they can see my work abilities. I will always turn them down because being a waitress is just a part time job when i already has got a full time job in the day.

I think different culture has different view points and attitude towards different kinds of job.I worked as a waiter before and that's nothing wrong with that since everybody earn a living with their hands and skills. But in where I am living at the moment, the story is different. Why? In this city, only the people without good education will be a waiter or a waitress.Actually in the Chinese culture is the case.I don't think this is a good thing but it is a fact. That's why I didn't feel like to be a waiter even for a summer job while I was studing in Canada in the beginning. But after awhile, I adapted to the Canadian culture and feel that there is nothing wrong to be awaiter as long as I am earning a living with my own hands.Well, when I came back to this city, everything is juts so different.

I have been a waitree several years ago at my mom's restaurant. I didn't like the job for a bit because I thought it was a tiring and long hours job but mom wanted me to help her at the weenkends when I was not at school so I did. I thought it was so fake that we had to pretend friendly faces in front of some ridiculous customers even though we were so mad about it.

I have never been a waitress! I did apply for those types of jobs years ago! Never got a job to do it and I am glad! I would of been awful at it! I used to be really quiet and shy and I know to be a wairtess that isn't a good thing! I would of been unhappy do and would of done a terrible job! I am glad I never was or will be one! I rather be in the background!

No, I haven't been a waitress. But any job that isn't illegal is noble for me. My brother used to work at a restaurant before as a waiter. After graduating from college, he worked for 3 months as a waiter, then came an opportunity for him to work overseas. I think his experience has helped him to be where he is right now. In fact he earns more than I do and I'm proud of him. Sometimes we need to start from humble beginnings for us to appreciate big things to come our way.

Yes,ive been a waitress in a hotel and take note am not in my own country. Its really very very hard especially its not my line and as a professional its frustrating in the beginning. But on the latter part as a positive type of person i begin to see the reality of life. honestly speaking its a very hard work serving others using my ability physically and being alert on things. And being not in my own country i learned that its not easy to be a waitress just to earn money.I learned to appreciate and respect even more their profession. Its not an easy job. Its hard but if am happy doing it i see it will be very easy for me anyway its a decent job especially we serve only the same gender and our uniforms covered our whole body.
