Are Older Kids Movies Better?

Lately, I've gone on a bit of a binge...involving kids' movies. There are several children in my house, so kids' movies and tv shows are constantly playing in the living room. it got me thinking about movies I used to watch as a kid, so I went back and started re-watching some of them. Is it just me, or were kids' shows just BETTER before 2000? I'm not going to pick on any one entertainment company, because frankly, they ALL seem to be providing the same unoriginal, slapstick crap to kids of today. I grew up with movies like Beauty and the Beast, The Land Before Time, the National Lampoon series, and so on - and I watched shows like Gargoyles, The Weekenders - and lets not forget Loony Toons! The stories were sound, the writing was clever, and I STILL enjoy watching most of them! The stuff they have on nowadays, though, kind of makes me sick. Hannah Montana and Spongebob Squarepants? Give me a break. Just because your audience is under the age of majority doesn't mean they're stupid, and doesn't excuse lazy writing and production values. When I have kids, I would rather show them tapes - yes, TAPES - of the shows from my childhood then expose them to the stuff they play now. Who's with me?

Not all the cartoons now are that bad. To most adults the shows do look lame, and maybe some of them have hidden adult humor. But to kids, they just see a funny cartoon with a story that gets solved. You could probably mix up the two.. show them tapes, and modern cartoons and maybe see what one they like better.
