Why would you want to be a dictator when your people don't support you?

With all the unrest overseas I have to wonder. Why do these guys want to remain in power when their people are trying to overthrow them? To me it seems like the riches & title wouldn't be worth the constant risk that one of my subjects might take a pot shot at me. Heck, some of their own cabinents might do it. If your going to be a leader you need to be loved & respected by your subjects & have their support. Your position & the luxuries that come with it are dependant on you providing for & keeping your subjects happy. I guess I just don't get the whole power trip they seem to be on, do you?

Apart from riches and title, a dictator can have many more things that an elected leader can have. He can kill for joy, rape whenever he is pleased, marry as many women/men as he see fit, pass his law for everyone to follow except himself, That is quite an attractive career option for a man or even a woman who is reckless and greedy in nature.

I don't think a dictator is stupid in nature, he just doesn't want to acknowlegde the fact that his days can be numbered if the people don't support him as leader in his dictatorship regime, he is often overwhelmed by his own sense of pride and insatiable urge for power to keep him doing what he did best in the past, continue brutally suppress and carry out reprisal against those who rise up against his rule.

If you can enjoy privilege that come with the power, you are suppose to understand why the dictator hang on to the power. The people around them keep telling him how loyal they are and how important he is to the country. He was alway surrounded by people try to keep him in power for their vested interest

You'd think the riots & missles hitting his home might give him a wake up call that he was being lied to then.

Many of these people are sounded by very loyal to you and tell you that things are not as bad as they seem. You get a very nice picture of the love people have for you. You know only what your loyal people tell you. His loyal associates have a vested interest in keeping him in power. It is interesting that you rarely see these leaders leave the country because if they are not there someone else might just take power like he did.

Go ahead, go on a vacation...& don't bother coming back! That should be a sure sign there's a problem with your leadership style.

I totally agree with you and I am also as confused as to why these unwanted leaders still want to cling to power. Is it perhaps the fear of being powerless and all the corruptions and wrongdoings will be exposed or just plain stupidity or false pride? That kind of leader is shameless.

I think I'd have taken the hint when the missles started flying, grabbed the money & run. What could these people be thinking?

I suppose that once you gain access to the power and hold it for a longer time,it starts getting to your head and affecting your judgement. I think so many dictators hang on to power at any cost, even that of innocent lives, because they have a distorted vision of reality, after a while they start to believe that everybody loves them and their people can't live without them, and they simply refuse to give up their power and privileges because they refuse to accept the reality.I guess power is a very dangerous thing for a person,it can turn a normal person into a maniac willing to commit anything, even genocide,to keep it.

I guess that's where the saying "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" came from. I seriously think there should be a comission that's sole objective is to go around & whack the rich & powerful in the back of the head with a rolled up newspaper whever they start letting their success go to their head.

Dictators usually labour under the illusion that the sycophantic adulation they receive from their people is genuine. They are also surrounded by YES men who protect them from reality and filter out any negative attitudes. So it seems to me.

People like that thrive on contention and enjoy the challenge of beating the people with their iron fist. It makes them feel manly. They probably love the challenge of outwitting their assassins, proving that they are better than everyone and more intelligent, too. They laugh at the puny people that grind into the dirt, they take joy in starving them into submission. They are the sickest of the sick, taking pleasure in the misery of others--not just a few, but an entire nation. They are not even remotely human so we will never understand them.

If they like outwitting their assassins so much perhaps we should provide them with a few better trained ones...

i can understand that some people in power need that power because it becomes part of who they are. the lifestyle, the wealth, the way they are treated because of their position and wealth would be difficult to give up for many persons. a wealthy friend once told me that after a while the money isn't the important thing. it's the acquisition of money that drove him.
